A week later, I'm still thinking about NHJ's article on NYC schools. It was courageous but a huge missed opportunity to call for real reform. She blames school choice, inequality, segregation, the wealthy and herself. But she seems reluctant to criticize the actors and policies implicated by the failures she documents, perhaps because those conclusions would be uncomfortable for many of her ideological allies. - She describes absentee teachers, poor instruction, unresponsive administrators, and students who graduate without mastering the material. But she never calls for greater accountability at the district, school, principal, and teacher levels. - She documents teachers failing to fulfill basic responsibilities but doesn't explore whether tenure and other employment protections allow chronic teacher absenteeism and poor performance to persist. - She laments the concentration of disadvantaged students but doesn't consider whether NYCPS should consolidate under-enrolled schools, thus allowing more resources towards instruction and increasing socioeconomic diversity. - She describes her daughter earning As in honors classes despite substantial gaps in her knowledge. Yet she doesn't consider the value of standardized testing as a check on grade inflation and identifying learning gaps before they compound. - She describes how experienced teachers choose to work in better schools but doesn't salute the districts that have had “reform superintendents” like DC, Dallas, Denver, and Houston that have used cash bonuses to incentivize the best teachers to work in the most disadvantaged schools. - She notes that eliminating homework harmed her daughter, but doesn't examine how the movement against homework is largely driven by equity advocates who argue that it can turn unequal home circumstances into unequal academic outcomes. - She condemns school choice yet uses it to secure a better school fit for her daughter, without noting it’s the only realistic escape valve for families who can’t move or afford private school. - She describes the “impossible balancing act” of teaching students at vastly different levels but doesn't explore how academic tracking can help students at both ends of the academic spectrum. - She describes disruptive students who harm the classroom environment but doesn’t ask for stronger disciplinary actions to protect other students. - She documents a school that lowered academic expectations in pursuit of equity but doesn't acknowledge how doing so perpetuates the very achievement gaps those policies seek to eliminate. Hannah-Jones’ story was powerful. She supplied the evidence for a broad examination of why schools are failing disadvantaged students. It could have been the strongest call in a generation for urban school district reform. Segregation and poverty are real obstacles. But they cannot become explanations that absolve everyone else of responsibility. We can’t wait to solve all societal issues before demanding higher performing schools.

Todd: Our home number is 201 353-1073…….You have the same name as my wife…Lisa….We’ve been married for 10 years. She’s pregnant with our 3rd child. Tell her that I love her…….(choking up)..I’ll always love her..(clearing throat) We have two boys.. David, he’s 3 and Andrew, he’s 1…..Tell them……(choking) tell them that their daddy loves them and that he is so proud of them. (clearing throat again) Our baby is due January 12th…..I saw an ultra sound…..it was great….we still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy………Lisa? Lisa: (barely able to speak) I’ll tell them, I promise Todd. Todd: I’m going back to the group—if I can get back I will… Lisa: Todd, leave this line open…are you still there?…… Lisa: (dials the phone..) Hello, FBI, my name is Lisa Jefferson, I’m a telephone supervisor for GTE. I need to report a terrorist hijacking of a United Airlines Flight 93….Yes I’ll hold. Goodwin: Hello, this is Agent Goodwin.. I understand you have a hijacking situation? Lisa: Yes sir, I’ve been talking with a passenger, a Todd Beamer, on Flight 93 who managed to get to an air phone unnoticed. Goodwin: Where did this flight originate, and what was its destination? Lisa: The flight left Newark New Jersey at 8 A.M. departing for San Francisco. The hijackers took over the plane shortly after takeoff, and several minutes later the plane changed course – it is now flying east. Goodwin: Ms. Jefferson…I need to talk to someone aboard that plane. Can you get me thru to the planes phone? Lisa: I still have that line open sir, I can patch you through on a conference call…hold a mo….. Todd: Hello Lisa, Lisa are you there? Lisa: Yes, I’m here. Todd, I made a call to the FBI, Agent Goodwin is on the line and will be talking to you as well. Todd: The others all know that this isn’t your normal hijacking. Jeremy called his wife again on his cell phone. She told him more about the World Trade Center and all. Goodwin: Hello Todd. This is Agent Goodwin with the FBI. We have been monitoring your flight. Your plane is on a course for Washington, DC. These terrorists sent two planes into the World Trade Center and one plane into the Pentagon. Our best guess is that they plan to fly your plane into either the White House or the United States Capital Building. Todd: I understand…hold on……I’ll…….I’ll be back.. Lisa: Mr. Goodwin, how much time do they have before they get to Washington? Goodwin: Not long ma’am. They changed course over Cleveland; they’re approaching Pittsburgh now. Washington may be twenty minutes away. Todd: (breathing a little heavier) The plane seems to be changing directions just a little. It’s getting pretty rough up here. The plane is flying real erratic….We’re not going to make it out of here. Listen to me….I want you to hear this….I have talked with the others….we have decided we would not be pawns in these hijackers suicidal plot. Lisa: Todd, what are you going to do? Todd: We’ve hatched a plan. Four of us are going to rush the hijacker with the bomb. After we take him out, we’ll break into the cockpit. A stewardess is getting some boiling water to throw on the hijackers at the controls. We’ll get them….and we’ll take them out. Lisa, …..will you do one last thing for me? Lisa: Yes…What is it? Todd: Would you pray with me? They pray: Our father which art in Heaven Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses As we forgive our trespassers, And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory Forever…..Amen The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want… He makes me to lie down in green pastures He leads me beside the still waters He restores my soul He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for thou art with me…..

Make no mistake: the sickness of antisemitism is raging in this country, and it is not a Democratic problem or a Republican problem - it is an American one. Jews are two percent of this country, yet last year they were the target of 70 percent of all religiously motivated hate crimes. A country that goes looking for scapegoats is a country that has stopped believing in itself. My faith is not your problem. The fact that Americans are losing faith in America - that is our problem.

All of us who want to see an Israel that is both just and safe cannot look away from what is happening in the West Bank, where neither justice nor safety is being advanced. In just the last 24 hours, we’ve seen stark maps of settlement expansion and read how retired Israeli military leaders are confronting what life has become for Palestinians, and all that has been destroyed, in the West Bank. However hard it may be to see a path to peace in the region, an absolute moral and practical necessity is the cessation of settlement expansion and settler violence. newyorker.com/news/a-reporte…

Defenders — and some critics — of Hasan Piker just don’t get it. The issue isn’t (just) that he lumps all Jews together and holds us all accountable for the supposed evils of Israel. It’s that his nonstop drive to demonize the world’s sole Jewish state, along with those who support its survival, crosses the line — by miles — between criticism and Jew hatred of the ancient variety.  Also, Mr. Piker, Zionism is in fact bound up with Judaism. It is not “false conflation.” Yes, some Jews are anti-Zionists. And yes, you have helped turned the Z-word into a slur such that large numbers of Jews, particularly younger ones, disown it partly out of misunderstanding. But when Jews are attacked for supporting Israel, they are being attacked for a core part of their Jewish identity. It is Jew hatred, it is unacceptable, and your rhetoric encourages it. Spare us all your taxonomy of good Jews and bad Jews.
do not let a coordinated republican smear campaign become “reality.” my argument against the dangerous false conflation between zionism and judaism which in turn increases antisemitism is now turned on it’s head. zionism is not judaism. antizionism is not antisemitism.

I’m glad @NYCMayor did this. But let’s be honest: the mayor has heard this many times already. Dialogue can create the conditions for a new relationship. But that will require action, not just talk. forward.com/news/844343/mamd…

During his victory address after he won the Democratic primary for New York's 12th Congressional District, Micah Lasher sent a message to OpenAI and Anthropic, two AI companies that poured millions of dollars into the race. "I won't be taking cues from either of you when it comes to protecting our kids, our jobs and our environment," he said.

Proud to have supported @micahlasher and prouder to call him Congressman. Congratulations on a hard-earned victory. It’s a credit to voters that they saw through millions spent on false attacks against him and instead chose a proven track record, results, and integrity.

I live in this district and no disrespect, but I don't know who most of these signers are. Here are some Jewish names who endorsed Micah Lasher: -Senior rabbis of KJ and OZ -Congressman Nadler -Ruth Messenger -Comptroller Mark Levine -Principal of SAR -Elisha Wiesel -Bloomberg
📝#NY12 local Jewish leaders, including Jewish elected officials, issue endorsement of Alex Bores. “Throughout his campaign, Alex has also taken a thoughtful approach to the safety of Jews in the state of Israel, and his approach can lead to a strong, lasting peace in the Middle East.”

Today, I cast my ballot for @MicahLasher for Congress. I’ve known him for nearly 20 years and he’s exactly the kind of proven leader we need in Washington. There’s no one who will work harder or be more effective at delivering for our district — and standing up for our nation’s core values. There is still a week of early voting before Election Day next Tuesday, 6/23 - so get out and vote! And if you live in the district, I hope you’ll join me in casting your ballot for Micah.

I have had the privilege of working alongside Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, the greatest Speaker in the history of our country. @TeamPelosi is a true champion of working families and upholding our democracy and I’ve learned so much from her.  I am honored to have her endorsement in my race for re-election. And I am humbled by her kind words.  When we win back the House in November, I am ready and uniquely able to lead the fight to take on the fascist in the White House. I’ve beat him before, and I’ll do it again.
