For India, New Zealand chose to reserve their best. Glenn Phillips turned it on with an unbeaten 40-ball 82, Finn Allen carved 45 off 24 balls, before Bevon Jacobs left India high and dry with 31 off 16. But evidently, even 225 wasn’t enough as India orchestrated a fascinating chase in the first T20I at Christchurch to ride into the record books. Primarily because Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma responded by treating this target as an invitation to attack. So spectacular was their unshackled batting that even a middle-order collapse could not derail a chase completed with two balls to spare. Janith Liyanage smashed a six off the penultimate ball as Sri Lanka completed the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history, scoring 430/8 to beat England in Rawalpindi on Thursday. Needing eight to win off the last over, Sri Lanka lost two wickets to paceman Josh Tongue, but Liyanage kept his cool to achieve an astonishing victory and overshadow Harry Brook’s record-setting knock. 🗞️ For in-depth reporting: epaper.hindustantimes.com 📩 Subscribe now: bit.ly/2QAOH22 📲 For News on the go, Download HT app👇 hindustantimes.com/downloada…

Japan’s Martian Moons Exploration (MMX) probe lifted off on October 20 on a five-year mission to study Phobos, one of Mars’s two moons, and bring back at least 10 grams of soil. The spacecraft will deploy the 25-kg Idefix rover to help assess the moon’s surface before collecting samples using two methods. The mission aims to shed light on how Mars’s moons formed and whether they contain material from the Red Planet. The samples are expected to return to Earth in 2031. 🗞️ For in-depth reporting: epaper.hindustantimes.com 📩 Subscribe now: bit.ly/2QAOH22 📲 For News on the go, Download HT app👇 hindustantimes.com/downloada…

#HTNumberTheory | The logical discrepancies ECI has been flagging in the mapping with the last SIR are a standard list of eight in the data analysed by HT: "Parent Name Mismatch", "Self Name Mismatch", "Parent Age Difference <15", "Parent Age difference >50", "Grandparent Age difference <40", "Progeny>=6", "Parent Marked ineligible in Last SIR" and "Progeny age gap < 9 month". The rest of this analysis summarises these as "name mismatch", "unusual age difference", "six or more children", and "mapping ineligible in last SIR". Data shows that the first two reasons are flagged the most, accounting for 5-19% for the draft roll, except in Karnataka, where the numbers are around 2%. Having six or more children accounted for 0.3% of the draft roll in Karnataka to 2.5% in Uttarakhand, while the mapping itself being ineligible was the case for a negligible fraction. To be sure, these numbers must be read with the fact that people could be flagged for one or more of these categories, as HT reported for Delhi on September 21 To read the full story 🔗 hindustantimes.com/editors-p… (✍️@naalmot) 🗞️ For in-depth reporting: epaper.hindustantimes.com 📩 Subscribe now: bit.ly/2QAOH22 📲 For News on the go, Download HT app👇 hindustantimes.com/downloada…

#HTNumberTheory | Despite a large fraction of the people in the draft roll being issued notices, Uttarakhand's final roll was still larger than the draft roll by 0.4%. The final SIR roll in all other states was also larger than the draft roll, except in West Bengal and Goa. Unlike other states, where ECI officers address and resolve logical discrepancies before the publication of the final SIR roll, logical discrepancies in West Bengal continue to be adjudicated by judicial officers even after the publication of an interim "final roll", which led to around 2.71 million people being excluded from voting in the 2026 assembly elections To read the full story 🔗 hindustantimes.com/editors-p… (✍️@naalmot) 🗞️ For in-depth reporting: epaper.hindustantimes.com 📩 Subscribe now: bit.ly/2QAOH22 📲 For News on the go, Download HT app👇 hindustantimes.com/downloada…
