This depends on what was recouped. I don't know at the time of payment how many records they sold back then and how many sold up until now. But I do think they at least recouped the marketing and studio dollars.
CrazySexyCool made $75 million, and T-Boz says each member of TLC got $50,000. So they marched into Clive Davis's office at Arista, where a friend told Puff Daddy his meeting was over.
Chilli says another friend stood at the door: nobody in, nobody out. Others stripped TLC plaques off the walls. Someone called the NYPD.
Then Chilli broke down crying: "We're selling all these records and we don't have anything to show for it."
The facts: TLC signed in 1991, aged 19 and 20, for a reported 7%. In July 1995 they filed for bankruptcy, owing about $3.5 million. Reports say part of it came from the fire Left Eye set at Andre Rison's house.
The case for TLC: they signed at 19 and 20. Their voices sold every copy. The money went to everyone but them.
The case for the label: it paid for the studio, the videos and the risk. Part of the debt was their own. TLC, the labels said, just wanted more money.
In the video below, Chilli tells what happened next.
If you sign a deal at 19 and it makes millions for someone else, should you be allowed to break it?
I thought I could have an NYC summer in Detroit when I was young. We had our own versions. Which was lit.

I wonder what this means for schools that recommend or require a vaccination.
NEW: Trump announces vaccines for hepatitis B, COVID-19 and influenza, among others, will no longer be recommended for all children.
“In addition, this executive order directs the attorney general to advance legal challenges against states that violate children’s rights to religious or medical vaccination exemptions.”
I wonder what this means for gas prices.
BREAKING: Iran has completely ruled out any future negotiations with the Trump administration, declaring it will wait out Donald Trump's term until January 20, 2029, per Iranian outlets and Ghalibaf advisor's post.
"Trump will not reach an agreement with us. We will accompany him until his term ends," said Majid Shakeri, advisor to Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf.
He posted: "The path to victory is neither fighting nor a deal — it is managing the process of neither war nor peace, up to the point of victory. Publicly confirming negotiations with the U.S. is sheer folly. The winning approach is denial, ambiguity, and strategic patience."
Iran's conditions remain unchanged: $300 billion in compensation, release of frozen assets, and withdrawal of U.S. forces. Until then, the Strait stays closed.
Drake is suing because his career isn't where it used to be because of the beef with Kendrick. He had a long run in this game and no longer the top male rapper. The label that got him to where he is redirecting their focus on another artist.
