“Chad doesn’t remember how he first heard about Kalshi. Most likely, he says, it was online ads…He couldn’t use regulated sportsbooks in Utah and no longer trusted blackmarket bookies. “Kalshi was the only way I could gamble legally,” he says. About six months later, his father became suspicious and discovered a series of Kalshi debits on Chad’s bank statements. He’d lost more than $12,000.”

How bad is tanking in the NBA? So bad I told my son this week that I would be fine with him supporting the Knicks (unthinkable for us Bulls fans) rather than the Wizards. But maybe the league should ditch the draft? bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Great article... reckon a lot of work and time was put into this story by @justinaknope and @iboudway... ☕️ "Sharps realize that they may not be the smartest people in the room forever. In general, markets evolve, and smart traders find their advantage narrows as other sophisticated players chase the same opportunities... The big trading firms are already tilting the playing field." The House settlement’s plan to review college athlete NIL deals with “associated entities” for fair market value has a number of issues. Some logistical (athletes don’t/won’t disclose all deals) & some legal (antitrust law). Thanks to @iboudway for reaching out for my thoughts.

A blitz of Facebook ads by what poses as a pro-Harris group, but is secretly a front for a pro-Trump dark money group funded by Elon Musk to misrepresent Harris's views to swing-state voters, does not appear to violate Meta's ad transparency policies.

The NCAA and Power Four conferences are spending millions on lobbying efforts in DC. Is Congressional help coming? “It’s like a bad end to a ‘Scooby-Doo’ episode. [It’s like], ‘It’d all be OK if it wasn’t for these meddling kids getting paid.’” 🔗 shorturl.at/Lb70a

"Those who said all this awareness would kill football were wrong," Chris Nowinski, a leading advocate on the issue of brain injuries in sports for nearly two decades, told me. “Football continues to be more popular in just about every measurable way.” nymag.com/intelligencer/arti…

A piece discussing why NIL payments aren’t a good substitute for paying college athletes for their actual work: playing their sport. And why collective bargaining is needed to create a sustainable model for college athletics.

Can’t imagine how that would work: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
If only there was a legal mechanism that existed where the schools and athletes could hash out the rules in a legally binding and protected way. Why haven't we come up with that yet?
