Billy Porter knows the power of fashion better than most. But he was still new to the world of Panem when he signed on to play a stylist in Sunrise on the Reaping.
“I’m gonna be honest with you: I tried to watch the first Hunger Games movie four times; I didn’t understand it,” Porter tells Entertainment Weekly, explaining, “It was too violent.”
But a call from Nina Jacobson — the Hunger Games franchise producer who Porter connected with via Ryan Murphy’s Pose — prompted him to give the series another try. After all, it was too good an opportunity to pass up. Or, in Porter’s words: “Daddy’s first franchise.”
Porter says he was “pleasantly surprised” to discover that The Hunger Games shares much in common with the dystopia he read growing up, like Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies.
“[These] books are about humanity and teaching children, through art, the difference between good and evil,” he says.
