When the Airfield Goes to Sea
October 27 marks Navy Day in the United States, an occasion to look back on an important chapter of the Korean War: carrier aviation.
On July 3, 1950, aircraft from the American carrier USS Valley Forge and the British HMS Triumph launched the conflict's first carrier air strikes. For these aviators, the journey into combat over Korea began on a ship's flight deck.
Korea brought two eras of aviation together: piston-powered Corsairs and Skyraiders operated alongside Panther jets. Carrier aircraft supported ground troops and attacked airfields, bridges, and railway communications. Once their missions were complete, pilots faced another challenge - finding their way back to a moving carrier and landing on its confined flight deck.
Deck Ops focuses on this side of the air war, our upcoming expansion for Korea. IL-2 Series. Five new carrier-based aircraft and an Essex-class aircraft carrier will open the game's next chapter. The expansion is planned for release in Q1 2027.
And there's more on carrier aviation today! Our latest dev diary is out now, taking you inside the cockpit of the F9F-2 Panther for a detailed look at its instruments and controls.

75 Years Since "Black Tuesday": The Final Nail in the Coffin for Mass B-29 Raids
On October 23, 1951, the skies over Korea became the setting for one of the most devastating engagements for American bomber aviation—an event that went down in history as "Black Tuesday."
That day, nine American B-29 Superfortress bombers set out to strike Namsi airfield, then under construction in North Korea. They were escorted by dozens of F-84 Thunderjet and F-86 Sabre jet fighters.
However, this substantial escort could not shield the bombers from Soviet-made MiG-15s. The fighters broke through to the B-29 formation and dealt a heavy blow. As a result, the American side lost three bombers, and several others sustained serious damage.
Earlier, in April 1951—after the events of "Black Thursday"—American command suspended such operations in areas where MiG-15s were active. By autumn, however, the command decided to resume this tactic.
The October 23 battle definitively exposed the futility of such tactics against jet-powered interceptors. Following the heavy losses in October, the American command abandoned these types of operations, shifting its focus primarily to nighttime bombing raids.

On 23 June 1951, after already landing successfully aboard the USS Midway, George Chamberlain Duncan was catapulted again alongside Edward L. Feightner, who was testing a Vought F7U Cutlass.
Duncan found he was carrying too much fuel for a safe recovery, so he jettisoned his tip tanks and loitered while Feightner completed six landings. On his final approach a downdraft aft of the stern dropped his Panther below the deck; the ramp strike split the fuselage, sent the burning rear section onto the fantail, and sent the nose section tumbling down the deck with Duncan still inside.
His helmet and canopy were torn free. Crewmen pulled him from the wreckage with scorched ears and burns; he returned to flying duties six months later. 🫡

October 8, 1950 - Formation of the Chinese People’s Volunteers
In the autumn of 1950, following the Inchon landings, UN forces went on the offensive and advanced northward along the Korean Peninsula. The fighting's approach to the Chinese border was one reason Beijing decided to intervene.
On October 8, Mao Zedong ordered the formation of the Chinese People’s Volunteers under Peng Dehuai's command. Despite their name, the force consisted primarily of regular units of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
On October 19, Chinese troops began crossing the Yalu River, and on October 25, they entered their first battles. Their involvement significantly changed the course of the war: subsequent offensives by Chinese and North Korean forces compelled UN forces to retreat from North Korea.
