Sixty years ago, Punjab and Haryana shared the same economic baseline, yet today, a resident of Haryana earns twice as much. Let’s dive into the divergent paths of these twin states and analyse the policies that defined their success and stagnation.
The contrasting economic trajectories of Punjab and Haryana offer a natural experiment in political economy. Despite a shared history prior to Haryana’s creation in 1966, both states took strikingly different growth pathways. Read our full analysis here: indianmatrix.substack.com/p/… The Economic Divergence: Relative Per Capita Income In 1960–61, undivided Punjab led India with a relative per capita income at 119.6% of the national average, while Haryana lagged at 106.9%. 60 years later, policy choices reversed this: Haryana hit 176.8% of the national average, as Punjab fell to 106.7%. Would ballot papers really change the election results? BJP’s dominance in Assam, Congress’s strength in Telangana, and AAP’s stronghold in Punjab are reflected even in ballot-paper elections. Regional political preferences don’t disappear when the voting method changes. So why does every defeat trigger conspiracy theories from opposition parties?

India. France. Spain. Chile. Different countries, different protests, but a common question: What happens when domestic unrest intersects with global power politics? Coincidence, convergence or strategy?

In 2014, 1 GB of data cost ₹269. Today, it’s under ₹9 - 96.7% plunge that fueled India’s digital leap. Read our breakdown on how India pulled off this turnaround 👇 indianmatrix.substack.com/p/… A decade ago, Indian telecom was trapped in bureaucratic paralysis. Governed by the archaic 1885 Telegraph Act, scarred by spectrum litigation, and throttled by municipal red tape, high-speed internet was an expensive luxury out of reach for most citizens. That gridlock was broken by decisive structural reform. Streamlined Right-of-Way clearances, transparent spectrum auctions, and the landmark Telecommunications Act of 2023 dismantled legacy bottlenecks, laying the groundwork for the world’s fastest 5G deployment. Crashing from ₹268.97 to just ₹8.97 per GB powered the UPI revolution, digital governance, and connected 1.4 billion people to the modern economy. Prashant Bhushan’s call for “regime change” in India raises a larger question about the role of activism and civil society organisations in shaping the country’s political discourse. India is estimated to have 37 lakh NGOs, nearly 29.35% of the total cited across G20 countries in this infographic. The question is not whether these NGOs should exist. It is whether organisations wielding influence over public policy and political discourse are sufficiently transparent and accountable. When calls for political change intersect with organised activism, scrutiny of funding, intent and methods becomes essential. Who funds these organisations, what agendas do they pursue, and how accountable are they to the public? In a democracy, advocating political change is legitimate. Demanding transparency and accountability from organisations seeking to influence that change is equally essential.
