🚱 Why Does Water Disappear During the Day but Return at Night?
24 October 2026 Time 12h20 - Cllr Devon Steenkamp
I want to explain in simple terms why some residents have water at night but lose supply again during the day.
During the day, more people are using water. Residents are showering, washing, cooking and using water at businesses. This creates high demand on an already struggling water supply system.
Because so much water is being used, the reservoirs cannot fill up fast enough to keep up with demand. Water levels and pressure drop, causing some areas to lose supply.
At night, most people are sleeping and using much less water. This means demand decreases, allowing reservoirs to slowly refill and pressure to recover. As a result, some residents start receiving water again late at night.
Unfortunately, when everyone starts using water again the following morning, demand increases and the cycle repeats.
Why Can't Joburg Water Give Us a Water Schedule?
Water is not like electricity, where supply can be switched on and off according to a fixed schedule.
The amount of water available depends on how much water enters the system versus how much residents are using. Reservoir levels and pressure are constantly changing.
This makes it difficult to predict exactly when water will return or disappear in each area.
The Bigger Problem
I want to make it clear that I do not accept this situation as normal or acceptable. Residents should not have to plan their daily lives around whether water might be available at midnight.
While high demand is contributing to the current crisis, we cannot ignore the enormous amount of water being lost through leaking pipes, ageing infrastructure and bursts that are not repaired timeously.
Rand Water is responsible for bulk water supply, while Joburg Water and the City's administration are responsible for managing and maintaining the municipal distribution network.
The City's administration must be held accountable for reducing water losses, repairing infrastructure and improving the reliability of supply. Residents cannot be expected to conserve water while preventable losses continue across the network.
I will continue raising these concerns with Joburg Water and pushing for lasting solutions, rather than accepting intermittent water supply as the new normal.
In the meantime, please continue using water sparingly wherever possible to help reservoirs recover.
Kind regards,
Cllr Devon Steenkamp

🚨Never ever poke the great man - Shaun Pollock on Temba Bavuma in the comm box🤯
Shaun Pollock said :🗣️
"Temba Bavuma is making a habit of delivering for his side when the chips are down, when the going gets tough, when the opposition tries to get under his skin. We have seen this too often now. I remember Indian team tried that as well, and he lets his action speaks louder than words, and Travis Head made the same mistake in the last Test, and he delivered another knock out punch. I can safely say that never ever poke the great man. He will go down as one of the greatest captains ever in the history of South African cricket".

💧 *Joburg Water – Supply Warning*
22 October 2026 - Cllr Devon Steenkamp
Joburg Water warns that excessive water consumption is placing severe pressure on reservoirs and water towers, resulting in low water levels and possible supply interruptions.
* Level 1 water restrictions remain in place.
* Additional targeted restrictions may be introduced in areas with high water losses, wastage and low payment levels.
* Illegal water connections will face increased enforcement.
* Ward councillors will be briefed on proposed restrictions.
* Affected residents will be notified of any new restrictions.
Residents are urged to reduce water consumption to help reservoirs recover and prevent prolonged outages.

Last night @LRCSouthAfrica hosted the 5th George Bizos Human Rights Award. It could not have had a more fitting recipient than Justice Kate O'Regan.
The event brought together people who have been part of the LRC's history in one way or another. I was fortunate to spend 8 formative years at the LRC early in my career - and shared lunch with George Bizos every day over that time.
We were reminded, in celebrating George, that he came to South Africa as an undocumented migrant boy on a boat, later recognised as a refugee - and of the prejudice that he experienced trying to access school, study and build a life here. We honoured his courageous contribution, the emblematic struggle lawyer over so many decades.
Kate O'Regan gave a moving, sobering and insightful address on the growing shadow of autocratisation and authoritarianism spreading across the world, the backsliding in democracy that so many countries have seen, and how South Africa is not immune to those perils.
There is no playbook for defenders of democracy and the rule of law, she observed, and it is left to us locally to find the most effective responses, drawing on history and the strengths of local institutions and civil society.
