Anita Archer: “It would be helpful if in all areas of life decisions were based on evidence” In education, look at the outcomes. Aim for competency.

We’ve talked a LOT about decoding. But decoding is not the end goal of reading. Today’s session was all about the power of read-alouds and the explicit instruction of the language comprehension strands of Scarborough’s Reading Rope: vocabulary, background knowledge, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge. Because we don’t just want students who can read the words. We want students who can understand them. Think about them. Talk about them. And write about them. Explicit, systematic instruction in phonics and word reading is essential- but we can’t become so focused on one side of the Reading Rope that we neglect the other. High-quality read-alouds give ALL students access to rich vocabulary, complex syntax, sophisticated ideas, and knowledge that may be beyond what they can yet read independently. And WRITING belongs in this conversation too. ✍️ Students need opportunities to take the vocabulary, knowledge, and ideas they are learning through reading and discussion- and put them into sentences and text of their own. 📖 Read it. 🗣️ Talk about it. ✍️ Write about it. The goal isn’t just good decoders. The goal is readers who understand what they read- and writers who can communicate what they know. @NickelJodi @JoannePitman5 @yyCBEdu @MountRoyalU #LanguageComprehension #Networding2026

🎯 "Why in the world should we not give children, while they are at school, the sort of books they can LIVE upon; books ALIVE with thought and feeling, and delight in knowledge, instead of the miserable cram-books on which they are starved?” (Charlotte Mason, Vol. 5, pg. 291)"

A gentle, yet firm, reminder: I remove followers that are suspected bots, suspicious, or of a shady/disreputable nature.

For the first three days of school, my 7th grade World Studies students won’t learn about maps, oceans, or continents. They’ll learn how learning happens. Using the Willingham Simple Memory Model, and a single photograph of a busy Italian piazza, we’ll dissect environment, attention, working memory, long-term memory, retrieval, and forgetting. As we do, every instructional procedure and routine is practiced and connected back to the cognitive science behind it so students understand not just what we do, but why. You can read more, and access the student reading, knowledge organizer, and other resources you can adapt for your own classroom, by clicking the link in the next post. ⬇️🔗

I’ve always found the phrase “teach like it’s your kid in the front row” or “teach like it’s the principal’s kid in your class” to be pretty condescending. It only serves to deprofessionalize teaching by implying that educators need to imagine a student is somehow personally important to them before they’ll do their best work.
“Teach like it’s your kid in the front row.” Teach, lead, and act like every kid in school is your kid. If you have kids or don’t - what if it was someone important in your life? It changes every lesson, action, and decision we make. Everything becomes more intentional 💯

⚠️ As back-to-school tips start coming in, a reminder that education is plagued with bad advice & pseudoscience, much of it working against student success. For example, ❌ the secret to math success is giving them a calculator ❌ mimicking isn't thinking ❌ procedures get in the way of understanding ❌ practice is just "drill and kill" ❌ kids don't need to memorize math facts anymore
