Sometimes feel like a lone wolf in the art world. Hesse’s Steppenwolf comes to mind: uneasy, solitary, unwilling to make myself more palatable just to belong. For a world so fond of celebrating rebellion, it has remarkably specific ideas about what rebellion should look like and who should introduce you. I’ve never been interested in adopting the fashionable aesthetic or joining the right circle to have my work declared legitimate. Apparently, being yourself is more convincing with the right endorsements. Yes, that can leave you outside. I’d like my work to be seen, but if the price of admission is becoming someone I wouldn’t recognize, I’ll keep walking.
