Physician variation in early sepsis treatment (substantial), causal inference methods on potential overtreatment with faster antibiotic practices (none), and understand how some physicians go faster (proactive, parallel processing care/team management)

Early identification of patients presenting with #sepsis is likely to aid timely care delivery. Compared to usual triage strategies, @Kasra_Rahmati (currently MS2 at @dgsomucla) identified two risk scores that seem to perform well at ED triage
sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
Using the AUPRC highlighted two models originally developed for prehospital use that seemed to work moderately well — but a lot better than unassisted triage — in picking out ED patients at increased risk

Thanks to @DrSamuelBrown @Terri_Hough and rest of great team for contributions and @Research_Inter and @NIGMS for support
We're recruiting a critical care physician to join our @IntermtnMedCtr #PCCM faculty! Job includes *substantial* guaranteed time for research/academic endeavors (add more with grant support). Clinic time likely too you want it. Details and application at: tinyurl.com/e7fhksv7
Thrilled to receive a Notice of Award for our R35 MIRA grant from @NIGMS to continue our work @Intermountain @Research_Inter harnessing observed practice variation to understand how to improve care for #sepsis (1/4)
Thanks also to my brilliant colleagues and collaborators in the @IntermtnMedCtr Shock Trauma ICU and ED and to the most excellent pulmonary/critical @Research_Inter team (3/4)
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, thank you to my lovely partner and most important sponsor and coach @DrQNguyen and to my amazing daughters (4/4)

1/Please share this thread on behalf of my physician colleague, Eunice Stallman, who is facing the nightmare of her 9mo daughter, Zoey, being diagnosed with brain cancer several weeks ago. @BlueCrossIdaho has added to their anguish by obstructing access to vital treatment.

Well it's finally here. New Global Definition of ARDS presented by Michael Matthay on behalf of a large diverse international panel.
More of a modification than a new definition. Berlin lives on but includes new patients under the ARDS umbrella

Get involved!!! #ATS2023 @atscommunity
Great work by Gabriel Hooper @UofUMedicine MS2 at #ATS2023 — Self-reported confidence metrics (aka “self efficacy”) didn’t correlate with resuscitation teams’ code blue performance, except when looking at how teams worked together (“non-technical skills”)
Secondary analysis of COPILOT trial, aulticenter study conducted @Intermountain and published last year in @accpchest. Funding from @Research_Inter @nih_nhlbi @NIGMS (thanks!)

Lower-than-expected rates of false positive presumptive infection dx among >8000 ED patients with #sepsis — now out @CIDJournal. Brilliant work by @UofUMedicine student Gabriel Hooper. Funded by @NIGMS @nih_nhlbi & @Research_Inter. Thx @IDSAInfo @HIVMA
