" In your opinion what do you think about the reception to DC5, I feel like people overhate it? "
My opinions on dc5 is pretty neutral, but I'd be also be lying if I didn't say certain topics this year did ruin my enthusiasm. For me it's carried by the beautiful work of the art department but I'm not "dying" to see the next episode either as time goes on. More like, it'll come when it does.
I feel like there's other parts to this conversation, naturally one can expect the dc fanbase to over hate anything that comes out as it does have its own hatedom. But there's another bigger part of the conversation where DC5 just feels rather safe as a season too.
Granted there was a lot of expectations to be had on this season, the first cast to have 24 people, first to have a genre where it's old vs new players, and a high expectation after the low viewership and reception that dc4 had in terms of a product.
With 5 episodes left it's safe to say it did not meet those expectations. Unfortunately we are at a very average and lower viewership than dc4 was, and dc4 never had the viewership that AS had, so the decline is even more noticeable. Additionally the Patreons are also really low, tbh the highest they've been this season is only cuz Lopy gifted so many subs as well.
So as a product that needed to be sold, it sadly didn't meet the mark.
I do think the simplicity of this season doomed it, I think people's predictions have been pretty spot on with the only exception being Nura losing. Having a season where you kinda feel you know what's coming does ruin incentive to subscribe since the shock value does reduce significantly. But leaks are also an inherit issue tied to this too.
External things such as the behind the scenes issues being aired out also played a part in how I think the season as a whole will be perceived as well. Not that it's bad to speak on these issues, it's encouraged and was very important that it came to light. But it's hard to not consider those situations when evaluating the season as well which can lead to many emotions.
Additionally I think the fandom is also tired of giving feedback that doesn't feel like it's always being listened to. Such as the treatment of characters of colors, or general balance in other queer relationships that isn't specifically mlm. This burn out does and will alienate the fanbase. I don't think dc5 necessarily applied the feedback that came from dc4 to the best of their ability if I'm being honest.
I do think though that "learning curve" of being an indie company is fading. And dc6 does feel like a now or never scenario. It's a lot of pressure but it's the reality where disventure camp finds itself right now if they wish to continue creating more seasons.
And this is coming from someone who wants the best for ONC / Disventure Camp, I've been an avid supporter, staff, and customer of them so theirs no malice here only critiques and thoughts 🩷
