Margaret Qualley’s monster makeup in The Substance (2024) trapped her tears and mucus against her face, and recording the creature’s voice involved a dental device that stopped her lips from closing properly. The device also restricted her tongue’s movement, helping recreate the difficulty of speaking inside the monster costume. Microphones placed inside her ears captured the unsettling internal sounds of her performance. On set, applying her prosthetics took roughly five hours. The costume left her relying on one exposed eye and ear, while holding her head and neck at an uncomfortable angle. When emotional scenes made her cry, tears and mucus pooled beneath the glued-on face. The crew would try to secure it with more adhesive, and removing everything afterward took another 90 minutes. She described the suit as a “torture chamber” and said she experienced panic attacks inside it. Separately, the facial prosthetics caused acne so severe that certain shots avoided her face. Qualley said her skin took roughly a year to recover.
