"The bitter lesson is based on the historical observations that 1) AI researchers have often tried to build knowledge into their agents 2) this always helps in the short term, and is personally satisfying to the researcher 3) in the long run it plateaus and even inhibits further progress 4) breakthrough progress eventually arrives by an opposing approach based on scaling computation by search and learning. The eventual success is tinged with bitterness, and often incompletely digested, because it is success over a favored, human-centric approach."

I’ve always had a lot of respect for martini drinkers. That’s someone who knows where they are going and wants to get there as quickly as possible. I need to feel the heat from the gin martini in my bloodstream by the time the appetizer hits the table

In the opening scene of The Social Network, when Mark's girlfriend breaks up with him he tries to stop it by saying "I'm under a lot of pressure in my OS class right now". Our Operating Systems class at Waterloo actually used harvard's curriculum and assignments. That was a pretty hard course. I feel for him. Erica Alrbight should have cut him some slack.

Coding may be dead but system design is alive and well. I'm spending hours each day with my agents iterating on precise flow charts and diagrams of how my code works. Permenantly feeling like Tony Stark when he talks to Jarvis with his hands and invents a new element.

Apple does this every year. When I was interning there in Fall 2019, me and a few of my intern friends decided we would use this week to take the cheapest cross ocean flight we could find, on our measly intern salaries. That ended up being a cramped 12 hour flight to Barcelona. Our total flight time was far from the total trip length. Good times.
New Apple CEO John Ternus gave Apple's US team the entire week of Thanksgiving off as thanks for their hard work.

This isn’t new, it goes back all the way to Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, done annually. New CEO is simply continuing this tradition. appleinsider.com/articles/26/09…

My first time back in a big European city since moving to New York. It's Sunday morning and I'm shocked at how silent it is. No construction noises! Feels pretty weird. Where are jackhammers and sirens that I'm used to

In the US, I will at times ask for my bill as soon as I order, so that I can just go when I finish my food. This is apparently an alien concept in Europe. This french cafe owner was very confused about why I wanted to pay while I waited for my croissant. He kept saying "after". He was so insistent that I let him have this one.

I just revealed the existence of Dragon Ball Super to my Japanese barber. He asked if Super Saiyan 4 was still state of the art. I had to inform him that he was behind on the times. I explained ultra instinct but I don’t think he fully grasped the concept.

There is an age-old adage: "don't roll your own crypto". It refers to cryptography, not to cryptocurrency. More bitcoin has been by people overcomplicating encryption schemes than has ever been stolen via hacks.

There’s nothing like a trip to the union square whole foods. Will you see a fight? Overhear an argument? Unclear. Will you be charged $35 for 2 pounds of fish? Absolutely. xitter.cf/i/jf/cards/money/share…
