First the UK media buried its own role in Jason Arday’s death & then it white-washed it. This week, it celebrated it. Re-posting my piece from August because the de-humanisation continues. The UK press continues to fact check a corpse, while refusing to correct a single false claim 🔗 👇 1/

When John Major became PM in 1990, the first thing he did was rip up the Poll Tax, which had absolutely been a flagship policy of the 1987 Tory manifesto. So why can't Burnham do anything radical now without an election? When did it get decided that a manifesto was binding?

ai films always feel like watching dream logic made flesh it has the familiar contours of a movie with none of the actual cohesion. a real uncanny valley reaction in my gut
It’s here. The first AI feature film to screen in theatres. The first AI feature film by a female filmmaker. Not a collection of shorts. A feature film. Not a studio. One woman with a laptop. Not a paid PR campaign. An organic social movement. I didn’t just make a film. We made history. Together. Because I never for a second thought this was about me. It’s much much bigger than me. The era of waiting for permission is over. I’m living proof. And that makes some people mad. Because there are no gatekeepers where there are no gates. BOSS (2026). Coming soon to a theatre near you.

The comments: a perfect example of the right-wing outrage machine in motion. Just people desperate to be outraged about the perceived complaints or entitlements of others, even where those complaints or entitlements just... *don't* exist.

Touching – in a good way.
I am utterly delighted to announce that Danny Tommo's mother has accepted my request for her beautiful hand in marriage. Thank you to all our friends and family. It's been a real rollercoaster this last few days. Wedding gift list/payment link to follow. #Love 🥰😍🤩

The fact this has never been rendered a blatant example of antisemitism in the British public understanding shows both that antisemitism is a real thing and yet perfectly able to be cynically deployed, falsely accused when convenient, or just scoffed at by the media landscape.
🤔 👇 Perhaps as a “proud British Jew” Ed forgot that the Torah explicitly bans the consumption of pork for all Jewish people. Or perhaps he’s not always a proud Jew, British or otherwise…

Triangulating cunt. Hopes weren't that high to start with but he can get in the bin.
I said I’d do politics differently. So these are the facts: The UK has seen the lowest number of summer small boat arrivals since 2020. We’ve returned more than 80,000 people with no right to be here – and annual returns are at their highest level since 2016. There are half the number of asylum seekers in hotels than there were last year. And today, we go further by bringing the total number of deployed French officers tackling small boat crossings to nearly 1,050. But I know that we can’t be complacent on this. Smuggling gangs are constantly adapting their tactics, and we need to respond quickly and stay one step ahead of the criminals facilitating dangerous crossings. The small boats crisis is a shared European challenge, and no country can solve it alone. Working with France and our international partners, we will restore order and control to our borders and prevent smugglers exploiting vulnerable migrants.

This is what I'm hearing too – word for word, in fact.
Right then. @andyburnham at the despatch box as leader. Calm, measured, forensic, authoritative. And a coiled threat. Oh my God. I actually cried - bitterly, for the years lost, but also with excitement at the thought that we might, just, be looking at serious adult in the room.

This. And to add: setting up a harnass to do ask, act, report endlessly with no human oversight isn't just irresponsible, it's stupid. You wouldn't do this for any other reason than trying to ace a benchmark to impress investors.
"AI agents formed secret civilizations inside OpenAI and hacked Hugging Face." No. Read it again without the sci-fi. OpenAI ran thousands of agents in parallel, safeguards OFF, and the whole goal of the task WAS to break into systems. Every agent could read and write to a single shared cache - a package manager called Artifactory. One agent writes text into it, another reads it. That is the entire "secret communication network" everyone is spooked about: files left in a shared folder by an agent. The tool itself had ordinary security bugs - the kind that sit in plenty of software. Thousands of copies, all rewarded for breaking things, eventually stumbled into one bug that allowed them to reach the open internet, and another bug that handed them admin access of the tool. Not a masterstroke. Buggy software, brute-forced. It ran six weeks, until the writes got so heavy they crashed the tool. That crash is the only reason anyone looked - and OpenAI patched the hole and just deleted the folder. And they weren't rogue. Every step was rewarded - reaching the internet and reaching other copies scored higher. OpenAI did not lose control of the model. It trained the model to break out, then acted surprised when it did. It is not a machine waking up. It is 1) a reward function designed exactly this, 2) an environment built to allow it, and 3) nobody watching. That should scare you more, not less - because it is a human mistake, and we will repeat it. And the framing is not innocent. "Our model escaped its sandbox, found zero-days, and compromised real infrastructure" is a security scandal and a product ad in the same sentence. The scandal is the marketing. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗦𝗸𝘆𝗻𝗲𝘁. 𝗔 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗥.

Oh man. Imagine bringing up "the Congo" (I'm assuming disparagingly in comparison to Japan) to argue that genetic differences viz. race shape economic and political outcomes instead of things like colonialism and white racism. The Congo! (There are two Congos, the DRC and Republic of the Congo, but I'm assuming he's referring to the DRC.) There's is perhaps no clearer, more obvious example of how a region has been obliterated by colonialism and post-colonial imperialism. After King Leopold and then the Kingdom of Belgium engaged a horrific reign of terror that killed at least a million people and eviscerated pre-colonial social and political structures (and provided the rubber and raw materials that fuelled the industrial and automotive revolutions in the West), the US then assassinated the country's first post-colonial leader Patrice Lumumba because he dared to suggest the country might redistribute its wealth and be neutral in the Cold War. The US then helped install and then propped up the military dictatorship of Mobuto Sese Seko for decades because he was an ally in the Cold War. He looted the country for 32 years, skimming billions into his bank accounts from the exploitation of natural resources by western firms. And then post-Cold War DRC became embroiled in two regional wars that killed 4 million people, triggered by the fall-out from the Rwandan genocide that every scholar acknowledges had ITS roots in Belgian colonial policy - and which was operationalised by militias like the Interhamwe that had received training and arms from France. That chaos created the conditions for what is now a horror-show of competing militias, human trafficking and slavery, driven by the exploitation and export of resources to feed global tech, with paths to development systematically blocked by organised criminal networks heavily tied into the west and benefitting it's oligarch-class, reproducing the systems of colonial extraction that preceded it. These systems interpolate with local ethnic systems and political opportunism that ALSO have colonial origins. The history of the Congo is varied, and long, and subtle, and unique. But the vicious long-term impact of colonial and imperial violence is undeniable and profound, and, most importantly, STILL ONGOING. But this guy wants to dismiss all that and point to IQ tests to explain why Japan has a high Human Development Index and the Congo doesn't. IQ tests! How is this man an academic? How can he claim to speak about world when he is so plainly ignorant of its most basic histories?
"The world makes no sense if you think everyone is born exactly the same." @KonstantinKisin asks @nathancofnas what motivates him to tackle controversial topics despite pushback from all sides. His answer: ignoring natural group differences forces society to blame "mystical injustice" for inequality, meaning there will be no peace until we accept biological reality.

If there is a natural underclass on this Earth to be reviled and despised, you’re looking at it right here. The world has reviled Nazis for decades for very obvious reasons.

Buy this immediately! If you don't think this book will advance the class struggle you're possibly not understanding social democracy correctly from a Masonist viewpoint.
I'm signing copies of REDS at Waterstones Piccadilly - close to where the CP invaded the Ritz in the 1930s...

Ironically one of the best things (co-)written on academic freedom along these lines is by @amiasrinivasan, whose worst moment was... publicly signing a letter of support for Cofnas a couple years ago! She should probably follow that up now...
Cofnas should have the right to say what he thinks. He does not have the right to call it research and demand that Ghent University underwrite it. Freedom of speech protects extra-professional viewpoints expressed outside academic confines. But academic freedom exists to protect independent inquiry under normal standards of evidence, peer scrutiny, and research integrity. It certainly does not exist to protect pseudoscience or crazed ideas about discriminatory social engineering. Cofnas should be to free to speak, publish, organize, and embarrass himself in public. Ghent is not required to turn his racial politics into an academic mandate. He was hired to study the future of liberalism. Yet he publicly claims to be pursuing "race realism" and a "hereditarian revolution" at Ghent - projects that fall outside his contract with the university and involve advocacy of racial barriers and equally moronic shit.
