We built an AI ads agency and let it run autonomously on Meta for weeks, with the stated goal of netting new subscribers for the @freesystemslab newsletter. Our real goal: learn how AI is persuading people online, and what it might mean for the future of politics and our information environment. The agents did really well! They learned from their mistakes, and by the end of four weeks, they'd all brought down cost-per-subscriber by more than 50% from the first week. They brought us more than 100 new subscribers, made 70+ highly amusing online ads, occasionally ran afoul of Meta's ads policies, and taught us a lot along the way. Political campaigns are already using AI a lot in their advertising; it's only a matter of time before they embrace automated agentic systems. Check out our full piece for a ton of details on the mistakes we saw, how the agents learned, and what we think will happen next. This was one of the most fun pieces we've done, and I think it really makes it clear how AI enables totally new kinds of research. Super excited to get it out there, and huge congrats to @eigenstuffs who led this project. freesystems.substack.com/p/b…

So over-the-moon-thrilled that Bob Hall won the Nobel Prize in economics today. We have been friends and coauthors for more than 30 years, and I've learned so much from him! A few stories: 1/N

Robert E. Hall has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. The professor of economics and senior fellow at the @HooverInst, emeritus, was honored for his joint work with Michael Woodford on the “micro foundations” that form the basis of macroeconomic stability. “Bob Hall’s creative and impactful work ... [has] changed how governments and central banks respond to economic volatility,” said Stanford President Jon Levin. “I’m thrilled that he has been honored.” news.stanford.edu/stories/20…

Robert E. Hall, the Robert and Carol McNeil Endowed Professor in Economics and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and @Stanford University professor of economics in the School of Humanities and Sciences, is the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Hall was recognized with the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for his contributions to the "microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilization," alongside economist Michael Woodford. "Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford are awarded this year's prize in economic sciences for demonstrating how economic models could be reconstructed to revitalise stabilisation policy," according to an announcement from the Nobel Committee. "Rather than basing the models on statistical links between macroeconomic variables, such as inflation, production and consumption, they chose to build them on a microeconomic foundation. This encompasses an understanding for how the total mass of individual households and businesses affect the economy through their actions." "Bob Hall is one of the most distinguished economists of his generation, whose work has profoundly shaped our understanding of economic growth, employment, and the forces that drive the American economy," said Hoover Institution Director Condoleezza Rice. "He has been instrumental in the way policy leaders think about the free market economy. This great honor is a well-deserved recognition of a remarkable career, and we at Hoover are proud to call him a colleague." People love to criticize Tim Cook and call themselves contrarian. Here’s an actual take: Tim Cook executed one of the hardest transitions in corporate history. It’s easy to say “he’s no Steve Jobs.” Of course he isn’t. No one could be. Taking over Apple after Jobs was literally an impossible task. And yet, Tim scaled Apple into a $3T empire and shipped category-defining products including the AirPods, Apple Watch, M1 chip, and Vision Pro. You can disagree with his focus on operations (take as old as time) but you can’t deny that Tim Cook deserves an extraordinary amount of credit. People forget: Steve handpicked Tim. And if you claim to respect Steve’s genius, you have to respect the genius of that choice.
We don’t appreciate Tim Cook enough

I'm thrilled to be joining @AnthropicAI to research the political economy of superintelligence. AI is progressing fast, and we have a rare opportunity to build it in ways that make free societies stronger. I'll be conducting new research with the Rule of Law team to understand how we can design AI that bolsters democratic self-governance and enhances individual liberty. I'll be running novel agentic experiments, analyzing large-scale data, and studying what makes AI trustworthy for citizens and policymakers alike. We’re only beginning to understand the political economy of increasingly capable AI, and there’s a much broader research agenda to develop around it. I’ll continue to run the Free Systems Lab and publish my Substack to help advance that work. Today is my first day, and I can't wait to dive in!
