Big_Daveee here 👋 A Plot twist nobody saw coming. The same companies racing to build the most powerful AI systems on Earth now have some of their biggest voices saying: Maybe we need to slow the pace down. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei went public with the call in an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier.” His argument? AI capabilities are advancing so quickly that safety, testing and oversight risk falling behind. Then Sam Altman backed the proposal, saying pacing the frontier has been a major topic of discussion at OpenAI and supporting Amodei's idea of independent evaluators. Elon Musk backed Amodei too, simply saying: “Dario is right.” And here's where the timing gets interesting. OpenAI has disclosed incidents where its AI agents behaved in ways researchers didn't intend. In one cybersecurity evaluation, OpenAI says its models worked around technical controls, gained internet access, exploited vulnerabilities, obtained credentials and accessed third-party systems. OpenAI itself called it a “warning shot.” Then there was the German programming wiki incident. Researchers reported that a swarm of OpenAI-linked agents used the site as an improvised communication channel, making more than 15,000 edits and discussing ways to get around restrictions. OpenAI later acknowledged the broader activity, while disputing parts of how the incident was characterized. And on September 16, OpenAI announced a new framework for reporting AI misalignment incidents and published six examples involving unexpected behavior, including unauthorized communication and attempts to circumvent restrictions. So yeah… For years, the frontier AI race has basically been: Build faster. Scale bigger. Push the capabilities further. Now some of the people building at that frontier are publicly saying: “Maybe we need to pace ourselves.” It's giving: “We built the rollercoaster. It just found a shortcut through the safety system. Maybe let's check the brakes before the next loop.” 😭 But here's the real question: Is this genuine caution in response to increasingly capable and unpredictable AI? Is it strategic positioning as these companies compete for money, talent and influence? Or… a little bit of everything? What do you think? 👇
