What will it mean for the UK and the world outside America that Donald Trump is now surrounded and hemmed in by a Congress that opposes him and his major policies and by world leaders who mostly feel the same? More specifically, will it embolden Andy Burnham, the leaders of the EU, Canada, Japan and their allies to cooperate with the Democrats in the Senate and the House to do what it takes to end Trump’s war against Iran, to bring Putin to the negotiating table, to reduce prosperity-destroying tariffs, to contain the extreme risks of artificial intelligence and in general to temper Trump’s reckless adventurism? The paralysis of the rest of the planet in the face of Trump’s unilateralism must surely be at an end. His moral authority, his claim to lead the free world, is much diminished. That is not in doubt now the American legislature is decisively set against him, and after American voters have spoken unambiguously that they reject most of what he has done in office that has a direct impact not only them but on us. America’s soaring gasoline price, that magnified his unpopularity, is just one narrow proxy of the wider harm he wreaked, to security and stability. Weakened too is his power. We will see whether he and a Democrat Congress can work together constructively. The presidential veto, and their control over important appointments and money mean they have to try to get along. But even if the result is stalemate, that is almost certainly better for global prosperity than what we’ve been living through. Much has been torn down overnight. What is striking is how many people have contacted me with gasps of relief and hope that I last recall when the Berlin Wall was demolished (I am not exaggerating - Trump insinuated his way into our collective subconscious, mostly as a bringer of a humming anxiety). There are risks that a wounded Trump will attempt to lash out in ways that deflect from his humiliation. And given his relative autonomy in foreign affairs, the consequences may not be benign. But even so, today is about opportunity, not fear.

And that’s a wrap! A HUGE thank-you to RWS, Merlin, @altontowers for having me in Edge of the Forest this year… a unique production that brought ambience, storytelling, and deeply immersive performances alongside the usual thrills and spills! One of the most talented and professional casts I have ever worked with and a ringing endorsement of the UK’s enduring creative and content sectors, whatever the genre may be ✍️🎭🎬 I’m sure Sir Patrick Stewart is looking down from the galaxy right now with that everlasting twinkle in his eye… and for all those looking to either get into or expand their presence in the game, I give you the words he gave me when I wrote to him many moons ago now as a young actor: “Keep reaching for those stars, always!” ⭐️ #scarefest #altontowers #edgeoftheforest #leshwall #acting

In honor of Patrick Stewart’s life, do yourself a favor tonight. Go watch season 5, episode 25 of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The episode is titled, “The Inner Light.” You can thank me tomorrow.

Rest easy, Captain. We have the helm. ✨ This is Webb’s look at Westerlund 1, a super star cluster. Because our galaxy is past its peak of star formation, and because stars live relatively short lives, only a few of these clusters exist to give us clues to that past era.

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

@ZelenskyyUa whatever you do, do not give in to US pressure, the day you do is the day Ukraine loses the war. Keep holding until victory.

The peace deal is very simple, Russia must leave all of Ukraine or be removed by force.

MAGA and pro-Trump bots pushing Ukraine to surrender to Russia just three weeks before the US midterms suggest Trump's pro-Russian faction fears losing Republican control of Congress. This looks like a last-ditch effort to secure concessions for Moscow before its political investment loses leverage.

When we started responding to Russia’s operation against our data centers, and when our strikes reached Yandex’s data centers, it suddenly became a little easier to breathe on many social media platforms. A lot of people noticed it. There was less hate, less division, and fewer provocations. Because there were fewer bots. And it’s pretty clear where those bots were coming from – if they disappeared when Yandex went offline. This proves, again and again, that Europe is not the source of the problems. Europe is not the one making everything more difficult. Most importantly, we need people in America, every morning, when the day in Europe is already moving toward evening, to really see what is happening. To see the truth. From a speech at the Warsaw Security Forum. (3/3)
