In all my years as an entrepreneur, investor, #KauffmanFellow, & CEO of @KauffmanFellows, I’ve been privileged to learn from the brightest minds in innovation & investing. I’ve coached numerous VCs using this framework, and I’m excited to share this coaching with you. #KFJournal
1/ VCs consistently bet on some of the world’s most innovative, and implicitly riskiest, companies in the pursuit of 10x-100x exits.
In this week’s KF journal, we share the VC framework for optimizing success through the Kauffman Fellows Four Pillars. ➡️ bit.ly/kfpillars

Retail, Substack, Reddit and most of all @X accounts are increasingly the most important forces in the stock market and yet there is no way for them to connect directly with the management teams of the companies they are writing about and investing in. And they have almost no visibility into the late-stage private companies that are ever more important.
The @TomorrowXSummit aims to change this. Hosted by @antoniogracias and Valor Equity Partners, @iconnections_io and @rbiscardi and @atreidesmgmt, we are going to have our own version of the superb Morgan Stanley or Goldman Sachs TMT conference with an epic line-up of both public and private companies. Instead of having sell-side analysts interview management teams, we are going to have X accounts like @citrini and buysiders do the fireside chats. We expect thousands of attendees at the Moody Center in Austin, November 17-18 and please note that security will be extremely tight given some of the CEOs that are going to speak.
Attendance will be free for X accounts that contribute positively to the discourse and affordable for retail accounts. Happy that this means friends like @DanielSLoeb1 , @altcap , @plaffont , @patrick_oshag and the @theallinpod crew will be able to afford the price of admittance should their schedules permit. And perhaps we can even get them on a panel or have them interview some management teams. I am sad to say there will be a different price for institutional investors who are not on X unless they are willing to reveal their anonymous handle, but I think this is going to be awesome for all. And everything will eventually be posted here on X for all to see. Open source for the win.

My latest, for @TIME: Why Dubai Will Abide
NB: If you’d told me 25 years ago I’d someday describe Dubai as one of the world’s great cities, I’d have laughed you out of the room.
But here I am.

UAE’s air defenses successfully intercept 9 ballistic missiles, 6 cruise missiles, 148 drones
The Ministry of Defence announced that the UAE’s air defenses successfully intercepted today 9 ballistic missiles, 6 cruise missiles, and 148 drones.
The Ministry explained that since the beginning of the Iranian attack, 174 ballistic missiles launched toward the country have been detected, of which 161 were destroyed, while 13 fell into the sea. A total of 689 Iranian drones were also detected, with 645 intercepted, while 44 landed within the country’s territory. Additionally, 8 cruise missiles were detected and destroyed, causing some collateral damage. The incidents resulted in 3 fatalities and 68 minor injuries.
The Ministry affirmed that the sounds heard in various parts of the country are the result of air defense systems intercepting ballistic missiles and fighter jets intercepting drones and cruise missiles. These interceptions led to minor to moderate material damage to a number of civilian properties.

Incredible opportunity to work with one of the best there is! 👇👇👇
In 20+ years of building @firstround, I’ve never hired for this specific role before.
I’m kicking off a search to hire an Investor who will work directly alongside me. They will share my obsession to meet with the highest potential founders as early as possible, often before they even have a clear “imagine if” yet.
Although the role itself is still being defined, my commitment is to work closely with this person to help them build the foundation of their investing career.
Here’s what’s probably true about you if you’re the right fit:
- You’re enthusiastic and obsessive. Following your curiosity has taken you down often weird and winding paths.
- You already know a lot of brilliant builders — and more importantly, they enjoy spending time with you. You have a unique ability to generate followership, likely because you give more than you take.
- You actually enjoy the work of building relationships from scratch: the cold emails, the endless events, the persistent follow-ups, the months of coffee chats. It requires relentless execution, and that excites you. You go about this work in an authentic way that isn’t conventional “networking.” If you’re looking for a role where the title does all the heavy lifting for you, this isn’t it.
- You don’t find it difficult to put unreasonable hours into your work because it doesn’t feel like work to you. You’d call yourself a “work enthusiast.”
- You’ve been immersed in the startup world long enough to have real context. What matters most is you’ve been close enough to startups to understand how they actually work and what great looks like.
- You obsess over markets, customers, and why some businesses work while others don’t, but you can also hang when a conversation goes deep into technical choices.
- You’re an exceptional communicator who tends to be more of a “simplifier” than a “complexifier.”
- We’ll work together incredibly closely, but you aren’t someone who needs to be managed. You learn best by watching, by doing, by asking well-calibrated questions — preferring to “take the wheel” instead of being a passenger. You’d rather shape a role than fill one.
If you want to spend your time with builders at the very beginning — and learn this craft of early-stage investing alongside someone who’s been at it for two decades and still thinks it’s the best job in the world — I’d love to meet you.
SF or NYC only, with long days and lots of travel in both directions. Apply below.

So good…
So after all these hours talking about AI, in these last five minutes I am going to talk about:
Horses.
Engines, steam engines, were invented in 1700.
And what followed was 200 years of steady improvement, with engines getting 20% better a decade.
For the first 120 years of that steady improvement, horses didn't notice at all.
Then, between 1930 and 1950, 90% of the horses in the US disappeared.
Progress in engines was steady. Equivalence to horses was sudden.
