NEWS: Today I’m launching The Small Ideas Initiative. We want you to submit ideas at Small-Ideas.org for non-controversial fixes, e.g “live sewage updates for beaches” or “standardised allergen menus”. A year ago, an interviewer asked what I’d have told the Government if I’d been advising it, I replied, 'Come up with 100 small things that piss people off and fix one a day for the first 100 days'. As I left the stage, I emailed myself, 'set up Small ideas institute!' And today, I’m excited it's happening. I’m funding two charities to work together to collate the submissions, narrow them down to about 200 doables then turn those into formal policy proposals which I'll bring back to you for feedback. Then to finish we've a Cross-Party panel who’ve agreed to pick 50ish, after which we’ll start trying to make them happen. You can read far more about it and who the cross party panel are here… blog.moneysavingexpert.com/2…

Neither Cartier-Bresson, Banksy nor Cold War Steve could have come up with such an image. Absolutely perfect composition and lighting (even the road signs are perfect)! 😍

The crater from the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. Just visible as this green arc on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the Chicxulub asteroid was 6-9 mi/10-15 km wide. It rocked the world. Image is from when we mapped the entire world in 10 days with a malfunctioning Shuttle - huge kudos to the Mission Control team that saved the day on STS-99. Ferdinand Magellan would have been impressed. lpi.usra.edu/science/kring/C… @NASA – at Mérida, Yucatán

Really distasteful & inappropriate ad served to me multiple times on @thetimes website today. I *think* it’s supposed to look like the wearer is ether a murderer or has been murdered. On a page about terrorism… ?

There’s been a little rain here in East Anglia overnight. That earthy smell when rain hits parched ground that most people adore is called petrichor. One of its components is geosmin, a benign compound from soil bacteria that human noses can detect in lower concentrations than sharks can detect blood in water. Seeking out water on dry plains was essential for our ancestors, so you’re waking up a pretty cool ancient brain pathway when you’re sniffing that good niff. Here’s a geosmin molecule:

Suicide is highly contagious. It triggers copycat deaths across both time & space. Especially if reported sensationally. Please share these guidelines from the Samaritans on how to responsibly report on suicide. They apply also to social media. Young people are particularly vulnerable. RIP Jason Arday. You were failed by so many including the media. Please don’t let this awful awful tragedy lead to more tragedy. media.samaritans.org/documen…

Well after that emergency alert went off for real across the UK, I am aware that a lot of people may have a phone hidden or concealed at home, especially if they are a victim of domestic abuse. They last thing that they will want is for their ‘secret’ phone to start making a noise and giving away its location. You can switch these alerts off by following the instructions at womensaid.org.uk/uk-emergenc… Please let others know about this. Even if it doesn’t affect you directly, you may have a friend or follower who could do with this information.

Under a Binface government, anyone who doesn’t accept human-made climate change as fact will be sent back to school, from Year 1 right the way to A Levels, to see if anything goes in the second time round. #VoteBinface

1/ As someone who has been in a few murder trials let me just try to explain why the police always ask people not to speculate, (with the caveat that I understand everyone is justifiably angry, saddened and horrified). Murder investigations and trials are very fragile things.
Police again very clear. No suggestion Anne Widdecombe's death terror related. Or that it is politically motivated. And that speculation on motive is unhelpful to their investigation.

Very cool, entertaining and with high production values: if I were @Nigel_Farage, I’d consider dipping into that £5 million to try to get out a video that can compare to it.
