Like to think I've got a decent vocabulary, but submitted articles / interviews still teach me new words: in the latest, 'fissiparous' and 'peculation'. Editors are often tempted to change or remove such words, but in the age of Google why would you deny readers that discovery?
I love the ampersand (&) but it really kills me when people use it in their copy as a replacement for 'and'. You can't possibly be that lazy.

Why are we calling 7th grade math class pre-algebra now? And isn’t algebra just pre-calculus anyway? Can we call it pre-pre-calculus?
Reading Guns, Germs and Steel and I cannot reccomend it enough. Once upon a time, humans took other humans’ resources because they simply wanted them. Ie. I heard your island has coconuts, I will come to your island, kill or enslave you, and take said coconuts.
