Andrew Coyne is smug contrarianism masquerading as insight. Never wrong, never useful. 1,000 words of condescending fence-sitting that hates everything and stands for nothing. The most overrated columnist in Ottawa.

🚨🇫🇷 France is now borrowing at more than 5% over 10 years and consequences could be far more significant than markets currently anticipate - FT 📈 Despite rising bond yields, France remains far from a sovereign debt crisis but the spread between French and German 10-year bonds is hovering around 170 basis points. Moreover, when we convert five-year sovereign yields into US dollars using cross-currency swaps, stripping out much of the difference in monetary policy expectations, French debt shows a synthetic yield above 6% compared with 5% for the US. Even though, this is not the rate at which France actually borrows, it reveals a significant deterioration in the compensation investors demand to hold French government debt. 💰 With an average debt maturity of more than eight years, France benefits from a substantial buffer as higher interest rates do not immediately affect the entire outstanding debt stock. However, this buffer only delays the problem and doesn't eliminate it. The French government's interest bill is expected to rise from €62.6 billion in 2026 to €72.9 billion in 2027. With €340 billion in medium- and long-term bond issuance planned for 2027, net of buybacks, a sustained 100-basis-point increase in borrowing costs could translate into several billion euros in additional annualized interest expenses on new issuance alone. If rates remain elevated long enough, this could structurally weaken France's public finances. 🇪🇺 France's situation remains nowhere near the European sovereign debt crisis of 2011–2012, when Greek bond spreads reached several thousand basis points. However, France doesn't need to experience a Greek-style crisis to suffer a major deterioration in debt sustainability. Unlike the US, whose interest burden as a share of GDP is actually higher, France does not independently control its monetary policy. Some argue that worsening French economic conditions would push the ECB to act but there is no guarantee that a confidence crisis specific to France would trigger monetary easing across the entire eurozone. ⚠️ When borrowing costs remain elevated while economic growth is weak and primary deficits persist, stabilizing public debt requires fiscal adjustments. Those adjustments can themselves weigh on economic growth making fiscal consolidation even harder. France still has full access to capital markets and government bond auctions continue to attract investors but we may face a fiscal credibility crisis that gradually becomes entrenched. ➡️ I believe the main risk is that investors continue to finance France at a price that makes its fiscal trajectory increasingly difficult to sustain, and that doesn't require a spectacular sovereign debt crisis.

Socialism, communism, and fascism are three flavors of the same poison: the state directing resources that individuals would allocate far more efficiently through voluntary exchange. Socialism nationalizes production gradually. The Venezuelan government seized PDVSA's operations fully by 2007, and by 2019 oil output had collapsed from 3.2 million to under 800,000 barrels daily. Central planners lack the price signals that tell producers what to make, when, and in what quantity. Without market prices, rational economic calculation becomes impossible. Communism simply accelerates this endpoint. Mao's Great Leap Forward collectivized Chinese agriculture between 1958 and 1962, killing an estimated 45 million people through famine. Total state ownership produces total state failure. Eliminating incentives entirely produces mass death. Fascism is socialism with better marketing. Private ownership remains nominally intact, but the state dictates production targets, prices, and personnel. Mussolini's corporatism in 1930s Italy preserved company nameplates while gutting economic independence. The owner keeps the liability; the bureaucrat keeps the decisions. Free market thinkers draw one clear line: voluntary exchange versus coercion. Every system above sits firmly on the coercion side, differing only in their preferred speed of descent.

PCQ leader Éric Duhaime in his opening address to the National Assembly, Oct 22 "We're going to fight to develop and exploit our natural resources, especially our natural gas. And it seems to me that on energy sovereignty, the PQ is more independent and sovereigntist than the others, on something as strategic as energy. I don't see how they'll be able to oppose it."

Many juniors look cheap right now after the recent pullback. GDXJ sits near $99, well off its 2026 highs, with plenty of developers trading at 0.2-0.5x P/NAV and some even at negative EV versus cash. Strong metal prices and cash-rich majors point to more M&A, but rising yields and dilution risk remain. Selective value is there for the well-funded ones.

The obsession with whether Hitler belonged to the left or right misses the far more important point. Both fascism and communism subordinate the individual to the state. Both reject individual rights whenever those rights interfere with their collective objectives. Left and right have become little more than the colors of competing team jerseys, with remarkably little consistency in principle. Both tribes routinely adopt, abandon, or exchange each other's policies whenever politically convenient. The left has embraced racial discrimination in the name of equity, while the right has embraced class discrimination through protectionism, industrial favoritism, and economic nationalism. And both have practiced the other's preferred forms of discrimination. The fundamental political distinction isn't left versus right. It's individual liberty versus collective coercion. Whether you're being sacrificed to the nation, the race, the class, or the collective, the violation of your rights remains the same. Changing the justification doesn't change the injustice.
Elon Musk claims Hitler was a far-left socialist because the Nazi Party had "socialist" in its name. By that logic, North Korea is a democracy because its official name is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Hitler was a far-right fascist who imprisoned and murdered socialists, communists and trade unionists. He banned left-wing parties, destroyed independent unions and worked with German industrialists. The Nazis used the word "socialist" as propaganda, partly because socialism and communism were popular among German workers at the time, and they wanted to attract those voters. Welfare queen Elon thinks political ideology is determined by branding.

Germany is running out of refineries, and it now admits that’s a problem. Economy Minister Katherina Reiche: “Whoever loses the refinery loses not only the supply for the gas station, but above all for the chemical complex.” Berlin now says it wants to stop more refineries closing. Look at the timing. Shell stopped processing crude at its 140,000 b/d Wesseling refinery last year. BP’s 250,000 b/d Gelsenkirchen has been up for sale since early 2025 with no buyer. Scotland lost Grangemouth, 150,000 b/d. Europe chose to import its diesel and jet fuel. Now the imports are the problem. Russian diesel exports hit a decade low. Gulf fuel exports run at about half of normal. US diesel costs about twice a barrel of crude. On Friday Germany’s stockpiling agency EBV put out a tender to sell diesel, heating oil and crude from its strategic reserves. In July it was still buying diesel to refill them. Germany’s reserve was meant for an emergency. It’s now dipping into it as winter starts. You can shut a refinery in a year. Building one takes most of a decade.
