'A New Germany', the first episode of The World at War, was broadcast on this day in 1973. Produced by Jeremy Issacs and narrated by Laurence Olivier, the series (which continues to be regularly re-run worldwide) was three years in the making.

Listening to Michael Stewart monologues is the strongest argument in history for not paying your TV licence
Michael Stewart speaks more than the main commentator.
He is absolutely unbearable.
Please make it stop.

Putin is a killer and a thug, murdering Ukrainian children, dropping bombs on neighborhoods, and tearing families apart. Calling him a humanitarian is like calling Witkoff qualified or capable of doing this job. What are we doing here?

With the late, great Oliver Reed currently wowing 2026 audiences all over again with his incredible performance in the restored version of Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’, I wanted to share this amazing clip of him from 1985.
The rather low-res clip comes from ‘In at the Deep End’, a BBC series in which presenter Paul Heiney tries his hands at a profession he had zero experience in. For this episode, Heiney was preparing for an acting role opposite Michael Caine in ‘Water’ and went to Oliver Reed for some pointers on how to play a villain.
Please enjoy what happens next.

In my opinion, we're going to lose something incredibly valuable to the cultural fabric & history of this country. If Radio 4 Extra with its carefully curated archive isn't the epitome of public service broadcasting, well, I don't know what is. Only the BBC can do it. A sad day.

On October 16, 2019, I told Donald Trump, “With you, Mr. President, all roads lead to Putin.”
On October 16, 2026, Trump signed an executive order waiving new sanctions on Russia passed by bipartisan majorities in Congress and signed into law just last month.
This decision insults America’s commitment to democracy and our brave men and women in uniform, as Russia helps Iran target American forces.
I join Republican senators in condemning this unconscionable capitulation to a Russian dictator who illegally invaded Ukraine and butchers innocent civilians.
As I have asked for years: What does Putin have on Trump that he would sell out America’s values?
