A lesson in why journalism at its best, matters. Shining light - repeatedly and doggedly - on the injustices of the world. As a former Guardian union leader, that the company is trying to offload The Observer, is beyond disheartening.
This is an incredible short film. If you want to understand why the Guardian & Observer journalists are fighting for our survival, please watch it. It gave me the chills. Winnie Mandela on how the Observer helped save Mandela's life & the ANC leadership youtube.com/watch?v=Tu70rcYf…

It's full circle for me too. I was overwhelmed as a young reporter to cover this. The guests were activists who'd fought for Mandela's release for years. Afterwards, he refused a car & we jogged down the Mall to the palace with him. It was pure joy. youtube.com/watch?v=YerHeGWG…

The need for a global outward-looking Observer, alive to these threats & committed to exposing them, couldn't be more urgent. And this film is a reminder of the cost of fighting for what you believe in. Which is what Guardian & Observer journalists are doing. Thank you so much for your support.

And, here we come full circle, with the Observer under mortal threat. Just as apartheid bleeds again into fascism. Because it's 2 men, raised in apartheid SA, with their hands on the steering wheel of the world's superpower & coming authoritarian state: Elon Musk & Peter Thiel.

What I find so fascinating film is the parallels to our own time. In the film, the son of legendary editor, David Astor, describes how it was witnessing fascism in Germany that made his father alive to the danger & evil of apartheid. A fact that informed his whole editorship.

Our incredible daughter Liz died in the early hours of this morning. She remained determined to the last. Even yesterday she was still making plans. We are so very proud of the kindness, empathy and courage she has shown in the last year. She was not only a phenomenal photographer, she was the best human, and the most wonderful daughter and big sister we could ever have asked for. No one could have fought harder for life than she did. There is a gaping Liz shaped hole in our lives that I am not sure how we will ever fill. We have so much gratitude to every single one of you, whether you offered to help, or liked or shared posts - you ensured Liz’s last two months were her very best. She flew high until the end. We have two last favours to ask. Firstly, we would like to ask you to share one of her photos - on your social media, or in real life, however you can. Let’s let her go out with a bang. #LizHatton (photos will follow in a thread but do also feel free to choose your own from @lizhatton_photography on Instagram) Secondly, if you can we would like you to help us with a mission to raise money to fund research into Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumour. With no charity in the UK or internationally funding into effective treatments are lacking. In 2024 a 15% 5 year survival rate is simply not enough. Together we can change that. Whether you can share, donate or raise funds - please be our village one more time. Let’s make this the last item on her bucket list and make sure other families don’t face a similar fate: justgiving.com/crowdfunding/…

The Orwell Prize for Exposing Britain's Social Evils goes to Shanti Das @shanti_das for reporting on modern slavery in the care sector & Mark Townsend @TownsendMark for exposing the kidnapping of children from Home Office care. Congratulations both & all involved at @ObserverUK.
