Are you interested in REDs and low energy availability?
Check out our latest work 'Does REDs exist?', which challenges the idea that low energy availability is the only etiological factor for the syndrome, and brings forward other possible explanations

📢 New paper in The FASEB Journal! We show that low carbohydrate availability in energy balance produces distinct effects on bone turnover and skeletal muscle, but limited endocrine disruption and no clear mitochondrial remodelling.

📢 New publication!
Is carbohydrate loading really enhancing endurance performance—or could some of the reported benefits be explained by placebo effects and athlete expectations?

Our latest commentary re-examines the evidence and highlights the need for more double-blind, placebo-controlled studies to separate belief from physiology in endurance nutrition. Rob Jones, @Jlnlouis @JoachimNielsen6 @JamesyMorton @Bicycle_Bryan

Huge congratulations to @weelunfoo on successful PhD viva defence today, it has been a pleasure to work with Wee and supervisors @columcronin @close_nutrition @jlAreta on a superb football nutrition PhD.
Thanks to examiners @Sam_Moss15 @liam_anderson5
New publication from our group 'Ketone Monoester Supplementation Effects on a Comprehensive Cognitive Test Battery Following Non-Exhaustive Exercise' @LJMUSportSci. We show largely no measurable effect of KME on cognitive capacity in healthy young males

Nice end of 2025 and start of 2026. Congratulations to @erickmosqueraec for the second publication of his PhD.
Stay tuned for more work on KME effects on adaptation, performance and metabolism from our group.

What happens to your muscles when you lose weight and exercise?
Our new piece in @ConversationUK explains how combining an energy deficit with training may have a positive effect on skeletal muscle

Excited to share that our new paper is out in The FASEB Journal after years in the making! 🎉
“Endocrine, Metabolic, and Skeletal Muscle Proteomic Responses During Energy Deficit With Concomitant Aerobic Exercise in Humans.”
🔗 faseb.onlinelibrary.wiley.co…
Overall: energy deficit + aerobic exercise may steer muscle toward a more oxidative and potentially more youthful phenotype. Proud of the team and excited for what’s next! 🚀
Grateful for the team behind this work @YNishimura87 @CLESpoSci H Taylor @weelunfoo @JamesyMorton @SamShep_ExSci @Jules_A_Strauss @ExercProteomics @LJMUSportSci
🚴♂️ New publication in Eur J Appl Physiol!
We tested whether ketone supplements change skeletal muscle gene expression after endurance exercise.
Spoiler: They don’t.
🧵👇
🔎 Implications:
Acute ketone supplementation alters systemic metabolism but does not change early post-exercise gene expression in muscle.
If ketones influence adaptation, it may occur downstream (epigenetics, proteomics) or with different timing/duration.
✔️ Thanks to our team & collaborators for their work on this study!
