Housing is more expensive now. There are a few reasons for this. Here in Chicago, one of those reasons isn’t super obvious—until you go to a community meeting for a local housing proposal. Here’s a thread about the absurdity of housing development in 2024🧵

Get outta here with your AI slop version of Will’s Northwoods Inn Go experience it for yourself. But have some respect and DON’T TOUCH THE MOOSE!
Right in the middle of Chicago, deep inside Cubs territory, there is a Wisconsin tavern called Will's Northwoods Inn. During the World Series, the street outside is Illinois, but the room inside is sovereign Wisconsin soil. Brewers fans pack the bar shoulder to shoulder. They call it watching the war from behind enemy lines. In old Japan, a clan enclave inside a rival lord's province was guarded like a fortress. You needed an official wooden pass just to cross the gate. At Will's, you do not need papers to cross the border. You just walk through the door in Brewers blue, and the bartender slides a basket of hot fried Wisconsin cheese curds across the wood. That is your passport. It might be the only embassy on Earth with a deep fryer. Diplomatic relations are strong.

Under current zoning, this proposal wouldn’t be allowed and therefore requires full city council approval. What a waste of admin time and taxpayer money. It’s a 5-story building next to the train in the city that invented the skyscraper. Just build it already!

I have no doubt that Alderman Lawson will support this project, but give him feedback anyway. Tell him to upzone the whole ward. 44thward.org/development/maj…

Two reasons why you should go to the Great Lakes in autumn: 1. the color orange 2. the color blue
I don’t think you can experience more beautiful orange and blue hues than the Great Lakes region in autumn

Extra benefit of bringing a newspaper for commute: the bag it comes in doubles as an umbrella bag so your stuff doesn’t get wet
I’ve been spotted in the wild! Don’t waste your commute by scrolling on a phone. Get a newspaper subscription and support local journalism (shoutout Chicago Tribune). Life is too short to be uninformed!

CHEERING: If you’re supporting a friend, it’s hard for them to notice you cheering because the noise of the crowd will drown you out. The solution: just start CHANTING THEIR NAME. People around you will join in. The runner will definitely hear it and get pumped up
