Beam-builders are one of those pieces of technology that should’ve seen more deployment in the past. With present technology, I believe they can be made even more efficient, turning inexpensive feedstock into voluminous and strong structures, in orbit or on the Moon and Mars.

The sci-future I dreamed about as a kid is right here at our doorstep Did you know you can request the raw photos from the Artemis II mission? There is a lot of information hidden in the RAWs that isn't visible in the jpgs. Check the next post in this thread for the raw

The next robber barons will own the picks and shovels of orbital computing. The new Rockefeller is going to buy up the heat-pipe makers, radiation labs, power-electronics shops, optical-component suppliers and space-grade manufacturers behind orbital compute.

Not sharing everything just yet, but this marble donut is a momentous achievement in the history of physical AI. For Monumental Labs, it is the splitting of the atom. Nothing will ever be the same. Your cities will be beautiful again.

“we effectively live in the ruins of a more advanced civilization that briefly appeared in the 20th century, but was bashed into the grave” Very well said @GeorgeRoush. This truth holds far beyond aerospace…
I hate to break it to you guys but there's nothing cool hiding in the labs. Everything that is even remotely advertisable has been advertised by these companies to try to increase stock value. The culture that built the SR71, the B2, battleships, Space Shuttle etc simply doesn't exist anymore. It's a lot easier to tell ourselves "we didn't ACTUALLY go to the moon" than it is to admit that we effectively live in the ruins of a more advanced civilization that briefly appeared in the 20th century, but was bashed into the grave by bureaucracy, social spending, and contract mismanagement. Look at NASA: - Webb a decade behind schedule - Grace Roman a decade behind schedule - X59 half a decade late - DreamChaser dead on arrival - X33 dead in the cradle - X38 dead in the cradle - Starship/Falcon 9 developed independently of NASA objectives - ISS on life support with no proper follow-on. Yes, Isaacman is fighting to change this, but this is clearly the track record of an agency that did not continue the pace of the 20th century. I have the honor and privilege of getting to experience a LOT of America's engineered solutions for space, and I continuously find myself more impressed with the 40 year old hardware being replaced than what we're replacing it with. Simply put: we don't have *it* anymore. We need to get it back. We need more Boom Supersonics, a new Skunkworks, an army of Elons. We need the government to be run by Isaacmans with a civic leadership all in agreement that their job is to BUILD the Republic, not to "manage" it. So, how do we get there? How do we bring this back?

Hey @AnthropicAI it’s nice you introduced the \btw command. Let me suggest an improvement that would make @ClaudeCodeLog less annoying. Please do not downgrade from Fable to Opus, or even Sonnet, a whole conversation thread on Claude code on the basis of something typed during a btw conversation. Thanks!

Industrial R&D One of the coolest things about working at the bleeding edge every day, is that after maybe 20+ years you just always know exactly where to look to find the answers to seemingly new problems. You can skip maybe 3 years of development just by knowing “oh blah-blah lab did that in the 70s”. You can literally retrace all the forks in the tech tree and just look for “Here’s what we knew at the time”, and then you can insert what YOU know NOW, in 2026, and see if the other forks that weren’t pursued would bear fruit today. It’s a common misunderstanding that you should always build off the things in use today. Many contemporary things are at dead ends, or cul-de-sacs, stuck in a local minima. You have to remember we arrived at many of those things by making decisions with incomplete information. Here Silicon Nitride turbine wheels ran at 98,000 rpm, producing 110kW and only failed because of metallic inclusions in the R&D prototype forming. We are much better at such forming methods today. We even have Hot Isostatic Press. There are people out there, who are mapping the entire industrial tech tree, side quests, forks and all. A lot of accepted wisdom is just wrong.

We just watched by-far the most dominant FIFA World Cup Final ever played. Small score… 🇪🇸 Spain 1–0 🇦🇷Argentina But insane numbers… • 68% possession • 20–3 shots One has to go back to the 1954 Final, where Hungary outshot West Germany 26–15 still nowhere near this level of domination. Felicidades España y Felicidades Mundo Gracias por vuestro apoyo. #FIFAWorldCup #WorldCup #Spain #España #Argentina #LaRoja #Football #Soccer #Futbol #WorldCupFinal

Many such cases. There are entire industries to be spawned once capital allocation gets smarter. No signs of it happening though.
that Elon was able to become a trillionaire is because the capital allocators have historically been bad. Why did it take until SpaceX that reusable rockets could be developed? Lots of us knew it was a win. But those who controlled enough capital wouldn’t fund it efficiently.

David Garrett (@david_c_garrett) and colleagues at Caltech invented this system. First prototype demo'd in 2024: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article… They're too humble to brag, but please give them love. Well-capitalized readers, please take inspiration: there are thousands of other equally amazing inventions in journals and preprint servers that can't go anywhere until folks like @midjourney and @DavidSHolz bring the capital, interest, and vision in taking them forward. Hugely grateful to them.
