The reason Elvis never performed in the UK, or internationally aside from Canada, is really weird.
Elvis died knowing that his manager - Colonel Parker - was from the South of the USA.
In fact that was not true, Colonel Parker was really called Andreas van Kuijk, an illegal Dutch immigrant, and was so afraid his cover would be blown he avoided leaving North America. He kept an iron grip on Elvis, even though Elvis wanted to see the world.
Bloke on Channel 5 News: "Elvis never performed in the UK, even when he was alive." EVEN when he was alive? #5News

Freedom of movement, in a wonderful one-minute nutshell
👏 @MarinaPurkiss
To everyone getting their knickers in a twist…
All because @andyburnham suggested a sensible conversation about freedom of movement
…do you perhaps need reminding of this?

You couldn't make the West Wing today as the idea of a moral, ethical and intelligent President would be laughed at.

Latest: Zelenskyy tells reporters over WhatsApp that restrictions on Ukraine's Starlink systems remain. Interceptor drones can't function, logistics and operations hobbled. The maximum speed is 161 kph; "exceeding this limit causes the Starlink connection to cut out completely, resulting in the loss of the drone."
He says Ukraine has done tests to determine whether SpaceX is truly facing technical issues, as has been told Kyiv by the US side, or if this is a "deliberate operation... to restrict us, cut us off, and prevent us from defending ourselves and protecting our people, both at the front and among the civilian population."
He says Ukraine "sent a couple of vehicles equipped with Starlink terminals into European Union territory."
"They moved at speeds exceeding 180kph, and the Starlink systems worked perfectly. We have the relevant logs and evidence to prove this."
He adds: "The conclusion is clear: the restrictions are in effect within Ukraine but do not apply within the European Union. In other words, this is a planned operation."

Neither Cartier-Bresson, Banksy nor Cold War Steve could have come up with such an image. Absolutely perfect composition and lighting (even the road signs are perfect)! 😍

In 2021, the SNP recognised the need for reform of Scotland’s law officers.
We don’t need another review to tell us what we already know, there is a conflict of interest in the Lord Advocate’s dual role.
We have long called for an independent Director of Public Prosecutions.

The BBC focusing on 'most-read' stories - which are no doubt being widely reported elsewhere - is the exact opposite of what a publicly-funded broadcaster should be doing.
Click-chasing, pure and simple.

Phil Collins became the biggest pop star of the 1980s almost by accident.
When Peter Gabriel quit Genesis in 1975, the band ran an anonymous ad in Melody Maker and got 400 audition tapes back. Collins was the drummer, and his job during the search was teaching the candidates how to sing the songs. None of them worked out. Eventually the band talked him into recording one vocal himself, a track called Squonk, and the audition process ended on the spot.
The costumes ended too. Gabriel used to perform in fox heads and flower masks. Collins told the band up front he wouldn't do any of that because the theatrics got in the way of the vocals. So the new frontman of one of the biggest bands on earth just walked out in regular clothes, sang, and sat back down at the drums mid-set.
Then he outsold nearly everyone alive. Collins had more US Top 40 singles in the 1980s than any other artist, put seven solo songs at number one, and sold 150 million records on his own.
Only three people in history have sold over 100 million records both solo and as a member of a band. Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, and the drummer who spent 1975 teaching 400 strangers to sing for a job he ended up taking himself.

Pres Trump’s clampdown on US media is unprecedented in America. NYT reported Reporters Without Borders has an index tracking press freedom in 180 countries. The United States now ranks at its lowest since the index began in 2002 — 64th, ‘just above Panama and just below Botswana’ @guardian quotes the Freedom of the Press Foundation ‘It’s difficult to imagine a more blatant violation of the first amendment than Trump banning news outlets from the ‘People’s House’ for criticizing the government. It’s also hard to imagine a dumber move’
