West Asia since Oct 7
I had a lengthy conversation with the scholars of the National Institute for Advanced Studies (Nias) about how West Asia has changed since Oct 7. You may read it here:

Iran said on Saturday (October 24, 2026) that U.S. warships would not be allowed to enter the Persian Gulf and warned that any attack by the U.S. and Israel would have repercussions beyond the country, amid reports that Washington was considering resuming air strikes.

Indian politics happens in Hindi. Political commentary should too.
The language of the core of Indian politics is Hindi. That is both a cause and an effect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rise.
There is also a politics between the Hindi and non-Hindi tracks of India. The common language of conversation across non-Hindi regions, and between Hindi and non-Hindi regions, is English. But the @BJP4India wants to replace English with Hindi.
The Hindu, under the leadership of Suresh Nambath, @nambath is making an effort to converse more with Hindi-speaking audiences. They will help decide the future of India. You will find a great deal of Hindi content on The Hindu’s platforms.
Joining this effort, I will make Hindi translations of my commentaries available whenever possible. I am also attempting to produce video versions of my commentaries in Hindi.
As far as my accent and diction are concerned, let me only say that there is no perfect way of speaking any language. There are dozens of English accents and dialects in New York City alone.
More than the BJP’s push, however, it is the Hindi belt’s higher population growth that will increase its weight in Indian politics. If politics is increasingly conducted in Hindi, so too should political commentary be. It is only appropriate that I begin with my piece on delimitation

Crude oil prices hit $115 despite US claims that the Strait of Hormuz is open. Remember, Brent crude was at $72 a barrel before the US and Israel started this war against Iran on Feb 28. And if Israel and the US resume strikes now, Iran will retaliate, pumping up prices further. Saudi Arabia is already at war with its critical infra under attack. We in #India, already hit by high energy prices, are going to get affected more by this madness by netanyahu and trump. Retail inflation is already at a 22-month high. Interest rates have started rising. Petrol and diesel prices will go up further in the coming days.
Pakistan and Turkey face difficult choices in #SaudiArabia, their treaty ally, as the war with the Houthis (Ansar Allah) is rapidly escalating -- in the 30th episode of #GlobalFaultlines, I answer audience questions, mostly on West Asia. Watch here:

Netanyahu says his "friend" Modi told him "India and Israel are fighting terrorism together". Modi says he and the “Israeli Prime Minister underscored the urgent need to restore peace and stability in the region”.
Received a phone call from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. We reviewed the sustained momentum in our bilateral ties and reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthening our partnership.
We also exchanged views on recent developments in West Asia and underscored the urgent need to restore peace and stability in the region.

The Israeli military had prepared for a multi-day bombing campaign to take place on the weekend of October 10 that would have targeted civilian infrastructure such as electricity plants, as well as nuclear facilities and regime targets. It did not go ahead because trump opposed strikes ahead of the midterms.

Why trump deals with #Putin and breaks with the West on Ukraine. He knows the support for Ukraine is unpopular; he wants Russian fuel in the market to ease price pressure in an election season; and this marks the fragility of the western sanctions regime. In a way, trump's flip-flop also vindicates the Indian line. Watch the latest episode of The View from India podcast.

India was attacked, India was penalised and India was demonised for “funding Putin’s war”. Now the Americans are funding Putin’s war — from The View from India podcast on the Trump-Putin energy deal. Link to the full episode in the next tweet.

SIR is in an induced coma. An announcement of its death may never come.
This week in Political Line.
Five indicators that suggest that the SIR is no longer a potent weapon in the government’s scheme to introduce a population-level citizenship test without legal backing of any kind. But it is also difficult to conclude that the current turnarounds in the implementation of the SIR would lead to a total abdication of the BJP’s strident position with regards to the so-called infiltrators and purification of the voter list. The last word on SIR may not have been said. At present, even though the death of SIR is not announced, it is certainly in a coma. An induced coma.
