Your career gets riskier as you go up the ranks. No one talks about this & just focuses on the big winners Business is more stressful but no one is allowed to fire you Different types of risk. Second one is more suitable for above average intelligence + psychopathic work ethic
Uber driver this morning: mid-50s, former middle-management tech exec. laid off from Intuit five years ago. Thousands of resumes later, he quit trying because it’s pointless when they can hire an H-1B for a fraction of the cost. Also ended up divorced after four kids & 25-year marriage. Not sure the DC types fully understand the simmering anger out there.

Scientists have created one of the most detailed 3D reconstructions of a human cell (eukaryotic cell) ever produced. This groundbreaking model, often termed a "Cellular Landscape Cross-Section Through a Eukaryotic Cell," combines data from X-ray tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and cryo-electron microscopy to map molecular structures in extreme detail.

Appreciate the love. Sweating = open pores. Makes you MUCH more susceptible to chemical leaching via the skin. Very overlooked!

My outlook on money has always borrowed from Buddhism. Desire is suffering. The less you want, the better off you feel. If you can take a walk in the sun, and really enjoy it, what does that cost.

Ask yourself why “you” are seeing these listings.
Someone is selling a manor estate in Burgundy with a private river, waterfalls and a natural swimming pond. 2 hours from Paris. Two buildings arranged around a courtyard, 1,700m² (18,298 sq ft) in total, 12 bedrooms, an artist's studio, stables and 7 hectares (17 acres) of land. Inside there's a music room with a piano, a library in the tower, a writing room, and a dining room built around a fireplace large enough to roast a whole animal. Herons and wild ducks live on the property year round. The river has a depth of 3 metres and you can swim in it all summer. Near Vézelay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Asking price: €1.39M ($1.6M). The French sure do know about living well. A river on your grounds, your own land to walk, swimming in summer, dinner outside. What's the French word for this kind of life?

I am 63. I have seen six plus decades of weather. Even if this total blockage of sky and sun can be explained by "atomospheric conditions" affecting plane contrails, we have a gigantic problem that needs to be addressed. Why should "it's just planes" close down concern about the fact that planes are destroying our right to see natural clouds sky and sunshine?
Replying to @naomirwolf
Devote some time to atmospheric conditions and flight patterns to get less anxiety for this phenomena. This was normal in movies in the 60s and 70s.

My generation has been doing independent research on the internet since we were teenagers. Boomers have been watching television & thinking the propaganda they’ve been repeating for decades is valid when it’s not. It’s hard to tell someone their entire worldview is a lie.

I posted about the benefits of memorizing poetry several years ago. They knock around in the back of your mind, and you find yourself discovering new things about them when you're in the shower or driving somewhere. I think internalizing the rhythms can also show up in your writing in good ways. Shakespeare sonnets are a good place to start because they're short. Three I like off the top of my head - 30, 73 and 138.
You have to memorize at least 3 of Shakespeare’s sonnets. It can be any 3, but you have to be able to whip them out at a moment’s notice. You need to be bardmaxxing.

You can also use AI as an excuse to do layoffs you were going to do anyway. It's the best way to claim you're ahead of the curve and reduce costs. No one will bat an eye
After Block's immediate 25% bump, you're going to see activist investors demand massive job cuts. Going to get really nasty, if not sooner, than within the next 12-18 months. Especially if the broader market declines. It's a "boost stock price" Ace in the hole.

The first major AI related mass layoffs. There will be more of these. If you’re in a white collar line of work, please have a plan. 🙏
we're making @blocks smaller today. here's my note to the company. #### today we're making one of the hardest decisions in the history of our company: we're reducing our organization by nearly half, from over 10,000 people to just under 6,000. that means over 4,000 of you are being asked to leave or entering into consultation. i'll be straight about what's happening, why, and what it means for everyone. first off, if you're one of the people affected, you'll receive your salary for 20 weeks + 1 week per year of tenure, equity vested through the end of may, 6 months of health care, your corporate devices, and $5,000 to put toward whatever you need to help you in this transition (if you’re outside the U.S. you’ll receive similar support but exact details are going to vary based on local requirements). i want you to know that before anything else. everyone will be notified today, whether you're being asked to leave, entering consultation, or asked to stay. we're not making this decision because we're in trouble. our business is strong. gross profit continues to grow, we continue to serve more and more customers, and profitability is improving. but something has changed. we're already seeing that the intelligence tools we’re creating and using, paired with smaller and flatter teams, are enabling a new way of working which fundamentally changes what it means to build and run a company. and that's accelerating rapidly. i had two options: cut gradually over months or years as this shift plays out, or be honest about where we are and act on it now. i chose the latter. repeated rounds of cuts are destructive to morale, to focus, and to the trust that customers and shareholders place in our ability to lead. i'd rather take a hard, clear action now and build from a position we believe in than manage a slow reduction of people toward the same outcome. a smaller company also gives us the space to grow our business the right way, on our own terms, instead of constantly reacting to market pressures. a decision at this scale carries risk. but so does standing still. we've done a full review to determine the roles and people we require to reliably grow the business from here, and we've pressure-tested those decisions from multiple angles. i accept that we may have gotten some of them wrong, and we've built in flexibility to account for that, and do the right thing for our customers. we're not going to just disappear people from slack and email and pretend they were never here. communication channels will stay open through thursday evening (pacific) so everyone can say goodbye properly, and share whatever you wish. i'll also be hosting a live video session to thank everyone at 3:35pm pacific. i know doing it this way might feel awkward. i'd rather it feel awkward and human than efficient and cold. to those of you leaving…i’m grateful for you, and i’m sorry to put you through this. you built what this company is today. that's a fact that i'll honor forever. this decision is not a reflection of what you contributed. you will be a great contributor to any organization going forward. to those staying…i made this decision, and i'll own it. what i'm asking of you is to build with me. we're going to build this company with intelligence at the core of everything we do. how we work, how we create, how we serve our customers. our customers will feel this shift too, and we're going to help them navigate it: towards a future where they can build their own features directly, composed of our capabilities and served through our interfaces. that's what i'm focused on now. expect a note from me tomorrow. jack
