Reminds me of San Francisco’s $1.7m toilet. Paging @hknightsf.
Econ of rising public sector costs still undersupplied (calling @nicholas_bagley!). Here from a wild NYT article about a park reno in NYC. The *plan* is 18 months closure. It's a few pull-up bars! This should be installed in an afternoon, no "3-D modeling" needed, for like 10k.

It’s actually crazy how you grow up thinking home-cooked meals every day are just normal, then get older and realise how much time and effort it took your Mom to make that happen and how lucky you were to have that.

🚨 Updated version of Transportation for the Abundant Society (with Jonathan Levine) now posted. It’s our answer to the question, what does “abundance” mean in the context of transportation policy? We think it’s distinct from domains like housing. Feedback welcome.

Ariell Reshef and I have a new draft out. It is a paper about one figure. From 1850-1970 the employment share of legal services is constant. Between 1970-1990 it doubles, and then stabilizes at the new, higher, level. Lawyers' relative wages exhibit the same trend. What happened?

I'm having an absolute nightmare experience inheriting an IRA into a special needs trust for which I am the trustee. Sharing in case any personal finance journalists are writing about how difficult it is for disabled people to inherit money.

A powerful message from @ChristoffDTodd on the moral, spiritual, and societal perils of gambling. I was grateful to hear him quote my recent story in @TheAtlantic, but mostly I was just grateful for his wisdom on what I think is an urgent issue.
"Gambling is morally wrong. Gambling is built on the desire to obtain something for nothing. Its structure requires that any gain comes at other's expense. It is hard to reconcile that with the commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves."

This weekend, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will gather for their twice-annual General Conference.
So I made a little game:
Can you guess the LDS apostles’ political ideology from their speech patterns?
You’ll answer three quick questions. Then you can guess where each apostle lands.
Don’t know the current LDS apostles? No problem; you can skip straight to the results.
This is part of a larger project I’m working on that uses text to measure political ideology.
I'm looking at people and groups we don’t typically think of as ideological, and whose political beliefs aren’t usually public.
The basic idea: how we speak reveals something about who we are.

If you think students can benefit from writing research papers, read this article! You can still assign papers!
Dartmouth profs are doing this very successfully. One approach is having students use Google Docs, where the version history proves human writing.
It works! 1/
