If process was the new thing people cared about then audiences should be flocking to see Wildwood and we would see a stop-motion renaissance. I would really love to see that but I have my doubts.
‘WILDWOOD’ earned $4.3M in its domestic opening day. Read our review: bit.ly/WildwoodDF

There have been many times in my artistic work where I’ve been frustrated with tools. Houdini was different since it felt infinitely extendable. But in all my work I’ve had countless ideas for other tools that were never built. Excited for what’s coming to Runway. Soon.
What I Talk About When I Talk About Control Making something and having the skill to make it used to feel tightly linked. Now the outcome no longer proves you have the skill. Or does it? When text-to-video first started working, that’s what it felt like. All you had to do was type in a short text description, press a button, and voila. It was magic or cheating, depending on how you looked at it. The fact that it worked at all was a breakthrough, but it also didn’t look like the person making the thing had done very much. We’d created something like auto mode for generative video, and “auto” isn’t a word we associate with craft. Yes, prompting is a skill, but being a better “describer” of the thing you want to make isn’t something we’ve historically been satisfied with as skill, unless your craft itself was flowery prose. As the models get more capable, the makers want more degrees of freedom to try things. New places to make choices become new places to exercise judgment, and enough judgment creates the possibility of craft. Creators start developing intuitions about the models, just like people have developed intuitions about cameras, editing software, or any other medium. New capabilities show up before we can understand them. So we build whatever interface we can manage to. Minimum viable control and minimum interfaces to get started. That becomes the first auto mode for that new tool. Then people use it, push it against its limits, and give us pretty loud hints at what they want to be able to do next. It takes time to figure out which new primitives are powerful, and where users want more control. People want more control. And they want more degrees of freedom. I believe that part of what makes models more controllable is that they become personal. AI is fundamentally a general purpose technology that can be shaped in any unique way you want. Models are generalization machines that can adapt to what you need. Everyone has a different way of using models. Different ways of finding them useful and productive. I strongly believe that most of the interfaces we use to control models will be individual-specific instead of general. Not many to one, but one to one. Any form of control you can imagine. Any version of Runway you want. Soon.

One fun part of getting older is that your friends end up doing cool adult things like owning apartments around the world that you can just visit. This was Porto in August.

holy shit, yes, i love love the look of this.
Using @runwayml Agent to visualize a new photography experiment I want to try. I need to pick up some redscale Lomo film and shoot this on my grandma's old camera.

I have no doubt that AI will be able to make one-off creative content but as soon as it's mass produced it will need to adapt to find the next interesting thing. I'm curious to see if and how this can be scaled so that it always stays ahead of the curve and of other agents.
Counter argument: Not only is taste subjective, it's a moving target. As soon as [tasteful thing] becomes easily replicable, it stops being tasteful. Taste is a status game with a strong defensibility mechanism. That's why the term is so fuzzy and ill-defined. Vagueness is the whole point. It's meant to be hard to copy.

But it's also extremely typical of the tech industry to assume everything can be measured and quantified as a metric, and automated forever. I'm not convinced that's the case for creativity and art when it's so subjective, cultural and changing.

So much of what we experience and understand in the world is visual. Why shouldn't agents show us what they are doing visually?
Agents can now show their reasoning, not just describe it. Visual Thinking is a new research harness that turns an agent's work into real-time video, so every step is visible and easier to follow, check and trust.

I interview a lot of people and it's been fascinating to see the language of machine learning changing to fit the LLM/transformer paradigm. People use terms like "token" and "context" even in cases where you previously wouldn't. Even linguistically everything is now a token.
