My 7-year-old son can’t watch sports with me anymore. Not because of the games, but because of the commercials.
The horror movie trailers are the worst. The terrifying imagery can send him into a spiral of anxiety that lasts well beyond the 30-second ad. These are images his young mind simply isn’t ready to process.
We talk a lot about mental health in this country, especially in sports. Yet between the relentless gambling ads, alcohol promotions and genuinely disturbing horror trailers, I’ve reached a point where watching an MLB or NFL game with my kids requires me to monitor every commercial break.
I love sports. I work in sports. Some of my favorite childhood memories were made watching games with my family. I want that for my sons.
I wish we could exercise better judgment about what we’re putting in front of families during sporting events.
Sports should bring generations together. Instead, I’m increasingly forced to treat game day like an adults-only event.
Something feels very wrong about that.

and y’all need to STOP treating kalshi and polymarket as if they’re The News. they are BETTING platforms, and treating them as if they’re AP or reuters (who they steal their “reporting” from) lends them legitimacy that they did not earn and do not deserve.

WAIT A MINUTE! I was told repeatedly that AI would not replace journalists; that it would ENHANCE our work; that it would expedite the rote, tedious elements of our job so we could focus on "getting coffee with sources" and tackling ambitious projects. Something fishy going on...
A week after McClatchy laid off journalists nationwide, the newspaper chain announced their replacements:
Editors for a new “innovation lab” focused on AI-generated lifestyle articles.
“Celebrating Our Team,” execs wrote in an email about the hires.

Dave Barry on his wife, the veteran sportswriter Michelle Kaufman, who was laid off by the Miami Herald in the latest round of McClatchy's collapse. So many stories just like this, across the country, on every news beat. The news industry is dying and we're all worse off for it.

I wonder who’s been actively promoting this degeneracy?
The NFL, MLB, MLS, NBA and NHL joined with their respective players’ unions today to crack down on betting-related harassment of athletes, coaches and families.
“Threatening the safety of an athlete or their family members over a sports bet crosses a bright ethical and criminal line, and it is entirely unacceptable,” the group wrote to gaming regulators in 35 states and the District of Columbia.

I don’t have much to add to this thread except my experience as a former Miami Herald reporter.
During my six months there, I watched McClatchy put the Herald — the 123-year-old paper whose staff broke the Jeffrey Epstein story, the Hope Florida scandal, and countless other investigations — on a path to becoming an AI slop factory. By the end it felt like I was training a machine to replace me and my colleagues.
I cannot begin to fathom the damage these layoffs will do to Miami, to Florida, and to a country that desperately needs real local journalism.

Disgraceful. The best soccer player in human history - one of the greatest athletes in any sport, and a quite profitable one for any media outlet - is front and center in the city of Miami, and the Herald whacks its best-in-class reporter.
The @MiamiHerald eliminated 30 positions today including excellent City of Miami beat reporter @tessriski & legend @kaufsports.
The Miami Beach beat reporter was open but won’t be filled.
Is the Miami Herald going to cover the City of Miami anymore?
Local journalism matters.

Truly stunned by this. Gutted for the brilliant and professional and knowledgable @kaufsports who I've been privileged to sit beside at a few sporting events. An absolute shame what's become of local journalism these days.

This is horrific.
@kaufsports is one of the best sports reporters out there.
What a loss for the readers of the @MiamiHerald.
💔 I love what I do but I realize every passing day I chose this profession at the absolute worst time in its history.
Gutted for colleague turned friend @kaufsports, who deserved a better end after decades at the Miami Herald.
