Well deserved! and congratulations to the @HFA_academy
Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel – awarded the 2026 medicine prize – discovered a remarkable protein, channelrhodopsin, in a single-celled alga.
Hegemann wondered how Chlamydomonas, a single-celled alga, is able to swim towards a light source. In the early 2000s, he and Georg Nagel discovered channelrhodopsin, an algal protein with unique properties, found on the surface of the cell. When it is illuminated by blue light, a channel opens through the protein. Charged ions then flow into the cell, creating an electrical impulse. They found that regardless of which cell they put the protein in, those cells became light sensitive.

My first bioinformatics publication didn't start with AI.
It started with Linux.
In this article, our Founder shares how Linux became the foundation of a real research publication

Yoruba not 'Yoruban'. It is not an English word.
And I'm curious, why is the Yoruba subset of 1KGP used frequently in these benchmarks. Alphagenome did the same thing.

Announcing "Fast Biology Bounties."
I'm giving away $10,000 for ideas to speed up or reduce costs for wet-lab experiments. I'm looking for ideas that are highly original and technically tractable.
A couple paragraphs will suffice. Supported by Astera Institute. Details below.

But many of the authors are based in UK and USA and the first author is a well experienced structural biochemist. Crystal structures cannot be solved in NGA as we speak. Be calm with your claims
OAU Team Records Major Malaria Research Breakthrough
A Nigerian-led team at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has achieved a major milestone in malaria research.
The scientists determined and deposited the first-ever crystal structure of Plasmodium falciparum transketolase bound to an inhibitor in the global Protein Data Bank — the first entry authored entirely by Nigerian researchers.
Led by Dr. Olatomide Fadare, the breakthrough could fast-track the development of next-generation antimalarial drugs amid rising resistance to existing treatments.

🚀 We’re hiring PIs in AI × Biology
The @astar_gis is expanding its AI & Computation domain and recruiting junior & senior PIs.
We’re building a place where AI scientists work tightly with experimentalists to create biologically validatable models.
What you’ll get:
• DNA & direct RNA sequencing
• Single-cell & spatial transcriptomics
• Gene editing & RNA structure probing
• Automated experimental platforms
• Dedicated GPU clusters + access to @ASTARsg & nscc.sg/ resources
• Close collaboration with Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology a-star.edu.sg/imcb/about-us
• Stable, long-term funding in Singapore
If you have a strong computational background and interest in biology, let’s talk.
📩 Send CV + short research plan. Please RT.

Lovely discussion with the @BiosphereAfrica team
It was such an uplifting, informative, interactive, inspiring, elite, captivating, and knowledge-filled session for day 1.
If you were there, you know these are your words 🤩.
Thank you Dr. Oladipo Elijah Kolawole, @mich_olufemi, and @josoga2 for sharing your knowledge.
