The Rappers In Their 20s Matrix 🧭
What really separates underground from mainstream rap? Which artists lean into lyricism and which ones want you to catch a vibe?
We put together a matrix that tracks the tendencies of each artist on our 20 Best Rappers in Their 20s list, mapping where they fall across two spectrums: underground vs. mainstream and lyricism vs. vibes.
But there's an important distinction: Mainstream doesn't necessarily mean popular. We're looking at each artist's approach to making and releasing music, their artistic identity and how they position themselves within the industry. An artist can have millions of listeners and still operate with an underground mentality (or make UG-adjacent music).
These placements are qualitative, not definitive. They're meant to show how each rapper approaches their craft and where they fit within today's hip-hop landscape.
