I'm sure small mills like Stoate's who sell unfortified flour are doing a roaring trade now that the government is forcing all bigger flour producers to add folic acid to non wholemeal flour. And that's great news. A huge network of small farms and small mills producing quality food, and connected directly to buyers without middlemen adding chemicals and taking away profit is absolutely the way to go. But saying to everyone who doesn't want government-mandated medicine in food: "Buy from a farm shop or a small mill. Make your own bread, cakes, biscuits, muffins, pizza dough at home from scratch" isn't a scaleable solution, in the short term at least. Lots of people can't afford all of that, and there aren’t enough small mills or unfortified flour to go round. And what working parents with children have time to make all their own baked goods? And sending people scuttling off to bijou farm shops and delis and remote windmills for their ingredients and forcing them to spend an extra hour in the kitchen every day cooking, even if that is all good for us, is just masking the actual problem here. Governments shouldn't be forcing producers and retailers to add unnecessary and potentially harmful medicine to everyone's food, and making us all jump through hoops to get something healthyto eat! If they get away with it with flour, including "organic" flour, what will be next? Rice? Potatoes? Eggs? Chicken? Yoghurt? Yoru favourite staple food, with added Merformin just in case you have diabetes, or statins to lower your cholesterol, even though they've never met you or done a blood test? Ice cream with anti-depressants, to keep everyone artificially happy? Don't imagine some bureaucrat somewhere isn't already thinking about it. Let's get folic acid out of flour. Sign the petition.
