On behalf of Canadians, I wish Pope Leo XIV a full and swift recovery following his successful surgery. ย  His Holiness is a source of hope and inspiration for billions around the world. His message of unity and compassion reminds us of the strength we can offer one another in moments of uncertainty. ย  As he recovers, may he draw strength from the prayers of those whose lives he has touched, just as so many draw strength from him.

Sending my love and very best wishes to @Pontifex for a speedy recovery. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน
Pope Leo XIV underwent thoracic surgery at Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, as planned, according to a statement from Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora released by the Holy See Press Office. The surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Popeโ€™s right lung, and tissue examined during the operation confirmed the diagnosis of โ€œlung adenocarcinoma,โ€ as suspected from tests conducted beforehand. The Pope was in the operating room approximately three hours, while the operation itself lasted about 90 minutes. The doctors said it was successful and there were no complications. Pope Leo awoke normally after surgery and, following a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the hospitalโ€™s 10th floor, according to the statement. vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/โ€ฆ

Bankruptcy is not enough to "move beyond" the Catholic Church's sex abuse crisis. The clerical/hierarchical culture has yet to square up with the reality of bishops' betrayal of the community at a sacramental level. bit.ly/4hd27x3

In a world fractured by conflict and division, bridge-building is no longer optional. I believe it is the work of our time. Following our historic meeting with @Pontifex last October, where we committed to working together, my @ENDCLERGYABUSE colleagues and I returned to the Vatican for meetings with the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors and other senior officials. 1/2 โ€“ at St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

Thank you, @Pontifex, for your leadership in bridging divides. During our meeting last fall, I shared that in a world so deeply polarized, the most radical thing we can do is sit down together and have a conversation. When we create space for respectful dialogue, we discover we are not as far apart as we thought. We left Rome encouraged by what was accomplished and even more determined by what still lies ahead. Looking forward to continuing this important work. 2/2 Hereโ€™s a link to @VaticanNews: vaticannews.va/en/church/newโ€ฆ

Proud to stand with the Justice Initiative at the Italian Senate as it advances legal reform for survivors of abuse in Italy. Together with my @ENDCLERGYABUSE colleagues, I was honoured to speak to international press at the conference that followed. The work continues. Letโ€™s keep the momentum going. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‘ โ€“ at St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

An honour to speak at the @EmbaMexIta during #Pride in Italy about Canadaโ€™s journey to ban conversion therapy. A heartfelt thank you to @CanadainItaly for their continued partnership and friendship. ๐Ÿ™ The butterfly sculpture at the embassyโ€™s entrance evokes the monarchโ€™s extraordinary migration from Mexico to other parts of the world, symbolizing transition and connection. ๐Ÿฆ‹ 1/3

Having recently visited Mexico, it was especially meaningful to celebrate its historic ban alongside Ambassador Genaro Lozano and to meet with activists from Mexico and Italy advancing change in their own countries. ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ Mexico now joins Canada in outlawing what the @UN has described as a form of โ€œtorture,โ€ marking an important step forward in global protections for 2SLGBTQ+ people. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ 2/3

It was a pleasure to meet so many new friends during the Pride event @EmbaMexIta and to learn from the important work being done. Keep going, everyone. Your work matters. Now, letโ€™s keep building a global movement to end this harmful practice everywhere. Until it is banned in every country, our work is not done. 3/3 #BanConversionTherapy #PrideMonth #Italy ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ

Happy Canada Day to my friends here at home and around the world! It's always a pleasure to meet with Canada's diplomatic missions wherever I travel. I was honoured to share the very first X Passport with Ambassador Joyce Napier during my recent visit to Rome. My sincere thanks to @CanadainItaly and @CanadaHolySee and to Ambassadors Joyce Napier and Elissa Golberg, for your continued hospitality, friendship, and outstanding service to this great country of ours. See you in the fall! Hereโ€™s to the True North, strong and free! ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น โ€“ at St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

110 years ago today, more than 800 Newfoundlanders went into battle at Beaumont-Hamel. More than 700 were killed, wounded, or went missing in a single day. Despite their horrific losses, the Newfoundland Regiment fought in World War I until 1918. Today, as we celebrate the greatest country on Earth, we remember all those who served and sacrificed so that we could live in freedom and peace.
