Exactly 189 years ago *from today, on 1st October 1837,* the British East India Company implemented the Post Office Act XVII and started a single postal system for the entire India for the first time. That day is considered the birthday of Indian Post. Next year, on 1st October 2027, this event will complete 190 years. Actually, Lord Clive in 1766 and Warren Hastings in 1774 laid the foundation of the postal system, but it was limited only to kings and government work. The common man got the right to send letters by the Act of 1837. Even after this Act, the real revolution happened on 1st October 1854. Lord Dalhousie laid the foundation of the modern postal service. He stopped the expensive postage charged according to distance and started a uniform half-anna stamp based on weight, door-to-door delivery of letters started and the first Director General post was created. That is why today's India Post celebrates its foundation day as 1854. The postal service which in 1837 was running on a few runners (Harkaras) and horses, today has become the world's largest network with more than 1,56,000 post offices. Where courier companies do not go, the postman still goes today. But on this historic day itself, a question comes to mind - In this 189-year-old department. It is true that the postal department has progressed in technology, but the promptness of the Harkara of 1837 is not seen in some offices today, which is the real regret. Still, hearty congratulations to all working and retired postal employees and to crores of citizens who trust this system for 189 years of uninterrupted service! 🙏
