During the reconquista, the southern parts of Iberia were largely repopulated by incoming Northern Iberians, which resulted in modern Southern Iberians having *less* North African ancestry and more IA Iberian ancestry than pre-Islamic Roman-era Southern Iberians
New insights into the population genomic history of the Iberian peninsula by Pablo Carrión! Turns out 80+% of Roman-period individuals in Spain carried ancestry from Eastern Mediterranean (particularly the Western Anatolian coast). sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Few places have shaped Eurasian history as much as the ancient Near East. Agriculture and some of the world’s first civilizations were born there, and the region was home to ancient Greeks, Troy, and large swaths of the Roman Empire.
But one of the most powerful tools for unraveling the past, ancient DNA, has had little to say about this crucible of history and culture, in part because DNA degrades quickly in hot climates.
Research from 2022 presents DNA from more than 700 individuals who lived and died in the region over more than 10,000 years.
Taken together, the three studies survey the history of the Near East through a genetic lens, exploring the ancestry of the people who first domesticated plants and animals, settled down into villages, spread the precursors of modern languages, and peopled Homer’s epics.

The level of ethnic and linguistic change that occurred between the late Iron Age and 1000 AD is terrifying.
Many of the languages on this map are completely extinct.

A fascinating discovery inside a late-Kamakura-period Buddhist statue:
During the restoration of the Jūichimen Kannon 十一面観世音菩薩 at Shōjuin 正寿院 in Ujitawara, Kyoto Prefecture, conservators found 95 sheets of paper within the image. 94 of which bore stamped images of Kannon and one containing a handwritten text in ink.
The statue, approximately 60 cm tall, is the temple’s principal image and is normally kept concealed as a hibutsu 秘仏 ("secret Buddha"). In announcing the discovery, the temple described the Kannon images' function to magically protect the written document.
The contents and date of the document have yet to be established. It will be fascinating to learn what it reveals about the statue’s history and the people who placed these materials inside it.

How megaliths spread along the Atlantic seaboard has long been debated: was it an idea that spread, or did people actually move and bring this technology with them?
A new preprint by @hmcccoll shows that neither explanation is exclusively right.
