Only thing I'll mention about 9/11 today since I don't see it mentioned as much: The search dogs got visibly stressed and actually lost morale from finding so many deceased people that workers would have to stage "successful rescues" (live people) for them. Man, my heart..

Bravo. Well said, Will Self.
After the death of Jason Arday, Will Self asks what happens when newspapers, platforms, editors and audiences become components in a machine nobody admits to controlling. The public interest is not the same thing as the public being interested.

This article is irresponsible and borderline libellous 'journalism' from @nytimes The statement that Prof Arday was an 'early career scholar and underqualified' for the Cambridge job is simply untrue He was a professor BEFORE he went to Cambridge/ 1 nytimes.com/2026/08/15/world…

Suicide is highly contagious. It triggers copycat deaths across both time & space. Especially if reported sensationally. Please share these guidelines from the Samaritans on how to responsibly report on suicide. They apply also to social media. Young people are particularly vulnerable. RIP Jason Arday. You were failed by so many including the media. Please don’t let this awful awful tragedy lead to more tragedy. media.samaritans.org/documen…

Jason Arday has committed suicide. RIP Jason. The academics concerned should not have put him in that position. Some of the personal attacks launched at him by gutter journalists and assorted racists were brutal and entirely uncalled for. I hope they're all pleased with themselves.

Death by a thousand regulations We regret to announce that we are no longer able to ship books to countries within the EU.  We are still able to ship to our customers in the UK, US, Canada and the rest of the world. Having spent almost twenty years building relationships with our readers and friends in Europe, the bureaucrats have strangled our business, and many thousands like us: The new packaging rules have made continued direct sales to the EU unviable. This means the loss of a significant part of our sales. We are sorry to have to step back from serving our European readers directly. Under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2025/40), which came into effect from 12 August, a UK business shipping physical books must register in the national packaging EPR scheme of each EU member state it sells into; appoint an authorised representative established in each of those countries; and meet the associated reporting and fee obligations. We have always taken great care with our packaging, using the most environmentally-friendly materials available. However, this is not an environmental law, it is credentialism, specifically designed to deny access to the market to everyone who is not a corporation.  The EU is a pyramid structure. We see apparent decentralisation with responsibility pushed downward, whilst control is kept at the apex. Control is exercised by defining what may ‘clear’ and by making non-clearing costly or impossible. There is no error in this, no mistake. It is by design – the ethical (green) imperative legitimates control. The EU is a tyrannical bureaucracy which is creating a bland corporate monoculture. You will own nothing whilst an invisible class above the bureaucrats in Brussels control everything.  These rules will eventually apply to every aspect of your business and private life. We hope those of you in the EU will continue to follow the work and stay in touch, even though you can no longer order physical books from us. We remain in hope of a better future. For those EU readers with outstanding pre-orders, we will be monitoring the situation, however, it seems likely that we will have to refund you unless these regulations are changed.  Peter Grey & Alkistis Dimech

This map shows the change in the percentage of people able to speak Welsh by community between the 2001 and 2021 censuses. Huge drops in northern Montgomeryshire, northern Pembrokeshire, and in the Teifi, Tawe and Aman valleys.
The Welsh language has proved remarkably resilient, but the percentage of speakers in some communities has been falling rapidly. ITV News Wales Reporter @RhysWilliamsTV takes a look at what could be behind the change and the efforts to keep the Welsh language thriving. itv.com/news/2026-08-06/wels…

This is great advice for neurodivergent people who need some reasonably easy and accessible regulation strategies.
I'm neurodivergent and have a PhD in healthcare research. Here are 13 ways to regulate your nervous system you’ve probably never heard of: 1. Shower in the dark (reduces sensory input and is one of the fastest ways to calm your overstimulated nervous system).

Nolan's reading of the gods is modern and reductive and uninteresting. The ancient view is far more nuanced and intriguing open.substack.com/pub/ofthed…
Nolan leaves open the possibility that the gods aren't real – it's a time of "apparent" magic, and the monsters elements are recounted by Odysseus to Calypso. When it's revealed that Athena (SPOILER!!!) comes wearing the face of a slain temple novice, then disappears after his confession to Penelope, the film is kind of pointing to the idea that the supernatural/divine is just a way of making sense of things which are too vast and scary to comprehend, like trauma or the power of nature!
