"The science of reading is not a philosophy, ideology, curriculum, instructional program, commercial product, or political movement. It cannot provide us with absolute certainty. It is a cumulative, reliable, and self-correcting body of interdisciplinary scientific knowledge derived from decades of converging evidence across multiple scientific disciplines, diverse student populations, and varied instructional settings".

We are very proud to have had the opportunity to work with Colleen and the team to develop some Reading Reconsidered style units for Australian texts. We learnt so much from this process. Make sure to check out what is available through @OchreEducation and @TeachLikeAChamp
If you love books and are concerned that students are not reading enough of them, here's the list of the book units that are available for grades 5-8 in our Reading Reconsidered Curriculum.

Some notes:
Holidays: Day 1-“This may sound awfully gradual, but teaching reading is an incremental process in which every lesson is a tiny contribution to something vast”.. 😍 You got me here Christopher Such! This is why knowing the intricacies of reading for teachers is vital 📚🐛

Lesson observation benefits the observer more than the observed. And those who observe most teach least.
If we want observation to improve teaching, we should be willing to model, to be watched, and to share the risk.
Professional trust is built through reciprocity, not scrutiny alone.

It was such an honour for the staff at Riverwood Public School to meet Doctor @brian_poncy at the SoLA explicit maths. A fantastic couple of days for us to be inspired supercharge maths outcomes for all our students. @RockingDanTM @sophiehiggo @EmmaMeddows

It was such an honour to meet @NickGibbUK today at the #SoLA conference today. As the Minister for Education, he did outstanding work shifting England to the explicit teaching of phonics, maths and knowledge rich curriculum. He now works to improve education around the world.

Great start to the SoLA mathematics conference this morning. Principal Matt Carter and Belinda Bristol presenting their journey as a collective of schools.
What is SoLA? (Science of Learning Alliance) A collaboration of schools focused on implementing research-driven, high-impact teaching practices to achieve excellence. Together with @training247au we have learnt how to translate theory to practice.
We have developed a professional learning community that support & work with other to develop programs, resources, & professional learning aligned to our vision for the new curriculum in NSW for English & Maths. The impact over 4 years lies in our collective data.
From schools ranging from the Central coast, regional and rural schools across NSW to the South coast past Wollongong, we are demonstrating how numerous aspects of the NSW DoE’s strategic directions are alive in our collective every day practice. @belinda_bristol @CarterM_PTL
A first for us & the incredible @brian_poncy Our maths squad presented SoLA’s first explicit maths conference open to all sectors of education. 2 days of PL with Dr Reid Smith-Ochre, Toni Hatten-Robert’s, Dr Ange Rogers, Liana McCurry, Jordan O’Sulliavan, David Morkunas,
Bruno Reddy, Kellie Norris and the Rt Hon Sir Nick Gibbs!!!! Such an achievement from our 3 core leaders Amy Telfer, Kat O’Rourke & Belinda Harrington. These girls as part of our project are leading the SoLA collaboration for maths for over 90+ NSW public schools.
Even the NZ Education Minister and a delegation of over 15 Principals came to see, listen & question how SoLA has brought clarity to the evidence base, implemented aligned to cog science & demonstrated differentiation to ensure equity for all. #SoLA @belinda_bristol @CarterM_PTL

I’ve just ordered this wonderful book written by an awesome Aussie. It has a great message that every one of us who teach should recognise!

Teachers don’t improve in the abstract. They improve, or fail to, in the schools they work in.
If we want better teaching, we need better school cultures: ordered, trusting, developmental, and led by principals who know how to make improvement possible.
Better schools = better teachers
