‘Students who used technology “every day for several hours during the school day” underperformed the most, while the gap shrank or even disappeared when students spent less than half an hour a day on a laptop or tablet.’

I may have to reconsider my skepticism about the benefits of paying good teachers more. In Dallas, TX, paying good teachers more to work in low-achieving schools produced immediate improvements that disappeared when the incentives stopped: bit.ly/3K4Z9Kp
So exciting to hear @LaburnumES First Grade Teachers @HenricoSchools talk about what a positive impact Sound Walls are having on the learning of their students!

Just saw CORE webinar Casualties of War: Reading Science Denial and Racism’s Impact on African American Children, with Kareem Weaver: To ignore the research and brain science is a violation of children’s civil rights.
Great morning seeing first grade classes do their Heggerty curriculum at Laburnum Elementary and using their teacher-created feedback tool!
#PlainTalkNOLA Arriving home, I am left thinking about David Kilpatrick and his inspired thinking that challenged and changed most of what I thought I knew about how to teach reading. I am so grateful for the knowledge I have gained from his books, webinars, and this conference.
#PlainTalkNOLA Thank You for a fabulous conference! Three incredible days of learning! I wish every teacher could experience this.
#PlainTalkNOLA David Kilpatrick: Paired associate learning is how we learn letter names/sounds and requires dozens to hundreds of exposures; orthographic mapping is how we learn words and requires 1-4 exposures.
#PlainTalkNOLA David Kilpatrick: children sound out words in order to remember them - have students try to sound out unknown words when reading!
#PlainTalkNOLA David Kilpatrick: Set for variability can mask reading problems.
#PlainTalkNOLA Thank you, Mary Dahlgren - now I understand why you wait to teach words: decoding print is possible only if the student can map print to speech efficiently (must have the underlying skills).
#PlainTalkNOLA Mary Dahlgren: How do you represent a phoneme if you don’t know it exists?
#PlainTalkNOLA Mary Dahlgren: Children move from speech to print; once I know the sound, what are my choices for spelling?
