The heart of "Earth Song" is the Black American experience of resistance and draws upon its indomitable strength: “The call and response form is a continuation of a long heritage in Black America that began with field hollers and spirituals. When the preacher or singer shapes a call, it is already a response to the shared suffering of the community. If the members of the congregation or audience recognize their own experiences in the call, they respond. In addition to giving voice to this “shared suffering,” call and response has often been used as a form of resistance to oppression: by representing the voices of “the people” and their struggles, it allowed them to perform solidarity and gave them the strength to take action.”
