What does real innovation look like in small island nations? It isn't about copying Silicon Valley—it’s about engineering homegrown tech solutions to solve local, complex problems. bit.ly/4zONY0R

Replying to @biancawelds
@biancawelds and I point this out to people so often and yet they find it hard to believe. By the time you are 45 you have decades of real-world experience, have built up a strong professional network of collaborators, people who facilitate introductions and understand what it takes to manage people. The young founders who do well get the limelight because they are outliers and outliers always get the spotlight. The many many failed young entrepreneurs do not get highlighted and so our perception of founders gets skewed.

Being called delusional is part of the price of achieving outsized success. You cannot become an outlier if you allow other people to define your maximum elevation. One day they will say that they always believed in you even though they doubted you the whole time. You are responsible for staying motivated. No one owes you anything.

Part of the reason debt repayment is so high as a % for low-income countries is because multilaterals repeatedly forced them to borrow at high interest rates while cutting investment in things that would grow their economies, like education, healthcare and local industry. The film “Life and Debt” offers a great breakdown of how that was done to Jamaica.
Money spent on interest is money that can't go to public investment, social spending, or support during downturns. In low-income countries, interest payments today consume over 15% of tax revenues. Read more in the latest Fiscal Monitor blog: imf.org/en/blogs/articles/20…

We Did It in 2026. Now We're Going Bigger! Year one of Caribbean Tech Week taught me something I’ve believed for 19 years: when you give Caribbean people a reason to gather, they show up. In February 2026, we launched Caribbean Tech Week with a 40-day run-up. No big budget. No guarantees. Just a simple idea to test: one week, many cities, one connected digital Caribbean. Here’s what our community built in that first week: → 14 events → 10 cities across the Caribbean and the diaspora → 35+ speakers → 500,000+ reach Founders, investors, developers, creators, companies, organisations, policymakers and students came together from Kingston to Port of Spain, Curaçao to Newark, St. Lucia to South Florida, in person and online. None of it happens without our hosts and partners. Thank you to Kingston BETA, Orbtronics, The Worx, RevUp Caribbean, Mscale, =SPACE, Founder Institute Caribbean, Haitians in Tech, Islandpreneur, Jersey Tech + Innovation, JTDA, Kolektivo and every organisation that put their name on the line in year one. Now we’re going bigger. Caribbean Tech Week 2027 runs February 28 – March 6, with more cities, more events and more ways to connect the global Caribbean innovation economy. If you’re a founder, company, creator, community, university, investor, or government that wants to put your city on the map, submissions are open. And if your brand wants to stand behind the rise of the digital Caribbean, let’s talk about partnership. 👉 caribbeantechweek.com #CaribbeanTechWeek #CTW2027 #CaribbeanTech #DigitalCaribbean #Startups #Innovation #Diaspora
