Tennessee Rep. Chuck Fleischmann wants to amend the 1982 Nuclear Waste Policy Act to allow spent fuel repository sites other than Yucca Mountain. He says that it could happen in the upcoming lame duck session Article link in reply. The current NWPA disallows repositories anywhere other than the Yucca Mt. site in Nevada. Nevada is unwilling to host a repository, thus complete stalemate in terms of final resolution of the "nuclear waste problem." The current NWPA may also prevent central spent fuel storage facities. It doesn't allow such facilities unless there is a licensed repository. Again, stalemate. The nuclear campus program offers states and local communities desireable nuclear facilities IF they're willing to host a repository and/or a central spent fuel storage facility. Thus the current NWPA is blocking the whole program. Tennessee is one of the willing volunteer states. So, Fleischmann wants the program to move forward.

NEW: The data center backlash may be peaking — or at least plateauing at a high level. 71% of Americans still say they would oppose a data center proposed for their area. But for the first time since 2025, that number did not increase since the last time we ran the poll.

Government corruption is polling off the charts in the midterm elections. It even crosses the great partisan divide as a top concern for voters. Combatting it will be easier said than done. Read more in @BGOV news.bgov.com/bloomberg-gove…

NEW: The Times’s Credit Crisis A recent New York Times front-page feature on chemical plants in the Trump era had deep reporting, stark data visuals, and an uncanny resemblance to a smaller outlet’s earlier investigation. Our federal permitting process is broken. We need to deliver cheaper clean energy for American households whose power bills spiked under President Trump. However, I have serious concerns that the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act does significant harm to our Nation’s historic preservation protections. The bill would threaten Tribal sovereignty and undermine the core mission of the National Historic Preservation Act. We all witnessed President Trump’s destruction of the East Wing; this bill will only give him greater legal authority to bulldoze more of America’s treasures. Trump has proven he can’t be trusted with our history and cultural heritage and I worry about the bill’s effects on New Mexico’s strong cultural heritage. Given these concerns, among other issues, I cannot support the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act in its current form.  As a former Vice Chair of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, I know we can have permitting reform while still preserving America’s history and culture. I look forward to working with the Senate to make necessary changes to the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act before it receives a vote.

Expect to see more House Dems publicly express concerns a la Huffman over the permitting bill after the Nov elections.
Thank you Senator. Let's make sure it's a real resolution, not a head fake or a lie, to avoid a redux of how Trump is punking those who supported the Russia sanctions bill. There are ways to ensure this in statute.

We're taking a hard look at the 400+ page permitting reform bill now before Congress—including its “green flags” that could help get more clean energy on the grid and its “red flags” that could weaken critical environmental protections and spur unfettered fossil fuel expansion.

.@SenatorHeinrich is right: Whether you’re liberal or conservative, you’ll like what our bipartisan permitting-reform bill will do for America.
If we want cheaper energy, we need permitting reform. If we want to force data centers to pay their fair share and then some, we need permitting reform. If we want to build out clean energy and the jobs that come with it, we need permitting reform. And all of that reform is in our Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act. Let’s get this done.
