Rewatching the 2nd quarter of Lakers vs Raptors and the Lakers played better in the non-Luka minutes than I gave them credit for. Some of it just came down to shot making as TOR hit a number of contest looks & LA missed theirs.
Can be better but the ball moved and once TORโs offense started to click JJ responded by putting Thybulle back in. Reaves had a number of assists die on a missed shot.
I liked the concept of Sexton bringing the ball up against pressure and allowing Reaves to operate off ball and attack.
The start of the 4th is where things got messy. Reaves went to draw the foul 3x and didnโt get the call, Grimes had a pair of turnovers before JJ pulled him*, Sexton badly missed a pull-up and then fouled to give a bad and-1.
Forced JJ to go back to Luka early to stabilize things.
Afrer Luka came back Reaves got a nice and-1, Luka got a bucket, got to the line, Kessler changed a shot at the rim, Thybulle had a nice drive and dish to Reaves for a push shot in the paint, and LA built a cushion for the 3rd string to almost ruin.
Will see what the non-Luka minutes look like tonight vs MIA.
*Sometimes Grimes reminds me of a Driverโs Ed car. Two steering wheels, two sets of brakes, and two different people controlling him. He gets caught in the /dribble/pass/shoot decision cycleโฆdonโt think itโs a coincidence that the one 3 he drained came when the clock was winding down so there was no decision to make

Save the think pieces on Austin Reaves. If thereโs one player besides Luka Iโm not worried about itโs him. TOs can improve (& they will). But besides that heโs still at 52/40/88 shooting splits for the season so far. In Austin we trust ๐ค

Doesnโt get any better for Austin today with Davion Mitchell in town. I refuse to play into the narrative bc I saw Austin kill the wolves as the #1 and only option dealing with much better defenders blitzing him. Hoping for a breakout game tonight. Lakers have a good chance of outscoring this team tonight considering Kessler is a bit of Giannis resistance and their perimeter play has been horrid to start.

Austinโs numbers this season have been almost identical to the previous 2 seasons. His FG% and 3PT% are actually up which is great. The glaring issue is his turnovers at 4.6 a game. Thatโs a career high.

Kesslerโs true value will never be more evident than on nights like tonight where the Giannisโ, Wembyโs & Jokicโs of the world that typically dominate every facet of games vs the Lakers (even while having AD on the court) have to work harder than they normally do vs the Lakers.
