An assisted death for those who feel a burden, are victims of coercive control or through inadequate palliative care choose death because there’s nothing else.  That’s not autonomy, dignity, nor compassion – it’s tragedy, it’s inequality, it’s abdication of responsibility.

Today I will once again vote against the Assisted Dying Bill. Not through a lack of compassion, but because no one who is elderly, disabled, terminally ill or frightened should ever feel they are a burden. We need dignity, support and properly funded palliative care not a law that puts vulnerable people at risk.

"My days may be numbered, but that doesn't mean that I want this chamber to rush through bad law!" Terminally ill @AshleyDalton_MP makes it clear that there are no excuses for passing the assisted suicide Bill, which is known to be full of flaws.

Very powerful speech from @AshleyDalton_MP, who has stage 4 cancer and opposes the assisted dying bill. "I have been terrorised with tales of people vomiting up their own faeces...it is nothing short of irresponsible to scaremonger people like me into believing our deaths will be horrific when with good access to palliative care most deaths are gentle."

On Yom HaShoah, I had the honor of moderating an event at UCLA that touched the very core of who I am and where I come from. I am the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. A man who was branded in Birkenau at 15, who lost nearly everything, and who chose to live in order to bear witness. This day lives in me every year. At UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine, we confronted one of medicine's darkest chapters: how physicians became instruments of genocide, drawing on the landmark findings of The Lancet's Commission on Medicine, Nazism and the Holocaust. And we asked what that history demands of us now. The answer is moral courage.
