Following KBRA's decision to revise the Outlook on Ireland's AA rating to Positive earlier this month, Ken Egan, Head of European Sovereign Credit at KBRA, spoke to Kathleen Gallagher at the Business Post about the country's improved credit profile.
“Ireland still runs a headline surplus and extremely low debt relative to other peer economies, it has a huge amount of liquid assets, and the cost of debt is relatively stable"..."If Ireland had to increase supply the market wouldn’t have any issue absorbing that supply based on the liquidity that we see and the demand components,” explained Egan.
Ireland's solid fundamentals meant it paid less than Germany on short-term bonds in September. As reported by The Business Post, "Ireland’s two-year bonds were yielding 2.89 per cent while Germany’s were 2.96 per cent. The Irish five-year bond was 3.06 per cent versus 3.08 per cent."

KBRA's Thomas Speller joined the Regulatory, Structuring and Lender Landscape panel at the FFA Paris Event, discussing key considerations shaping the evolving fund finance market.
Ken Egan Senior Director of Sovereigns at KBRA, was featured in @CNBC 's main online story today on the market reaction to events in France. The article covers how the recent social unrest on the streets of Paris and the country’s political uncertainty is spilling over into French government bonds and other assets.
“The question markets will be asking is how easily France can actually make progress from here,” said Egan. Despite the challenging backdrop, Egan noted auctions last week showed there remains “still very solid underlying demand for French debt.”
Amid the uncertainty, the French 10-year bond yield jumped more than 10 basis points today, remaining near its highest level in decades. Meanwhile, “the euro weakened and the CAC 40 fell, while the premium on French debt over German Bunds remained near levels last seen during the euro-area debt crisis,” as reported by CNBC.

Europe’s growth outlook is proving more resilient than previously expected, with the IMF upgrading its 2026 forecasts for Germany and the UK even as France continues to lag. Persistent inflation, elevated borrowing costs, and limited fiscal flexibility complicate the recovery, reinforcing the importance of credit differentiation across countries and issuers.

KBRA’s Senior Director of European Sovereign Credit, Ken Egan sat down with Euronews to discuss how European bond markets are reacting to French fiscal stress, sticky inflation, and ECB rate hikes. As reported by Euronews: “France is the centre of the stress in the Eurozone bond markets, but the pressure is spreading.”
For Egan, the move "looks like a mix, and it is difficult to separate exactly how much of the move is France-specific. A lot of the broader rise in yields reflects the energy shock and expectations for tighter ECB policy, but France clearly carries an additional fiscal and political premium."
Speaking on whether these developments could trigger a Eurozone recession, Egan said, "if higher energy costs continue to feed through while market yields and financing costs are already restrictive, the casualty may increasingly be weaker demand and growth."
