From building infrastructure to carrying a family legacy, the Adani Group featured in Jeffrey Sachs's address as an example of the wider responsibilities associated with business.
Speaking in Varanasi, Jeffrey Sachs, President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), described Adani as a major contributor to India's change and advancement. He linked infrastructure development with India's rapid growth as the world's fastest-growing major economy.
Sachs then compared the Adani family identity with SpaceX, Amazon, Meta and Google, pointing out that these American companies do not carry a particular family's name. Referring to Dr Adani's remarks, he highlighted the Adani family's continuing concern about what it gives back to society.
He recalled a leading Italian pharmaceutical company and the Illy coffee company, both in their third generation, as examples of family businesses with a different approach. Such businesses, often passed down through three or four generations, carry responsibilities beyond financial returns.
His concluding message was that Adani and all businesses must consider where profits originate, the risks they take and the costs imposed on others. Business is not just about economic performance; it is also a moral institution whose purpose must be guided by deeper wisdom.
