Recently, I pitched a story about the very weird tradition of competitive worm charming. This was a bit of a tumbleweed pitch — mostly silence from editors and a few bemused rejections. (1/8) 🪱

I traced the footpath - now a track for the keeper’s 4x4 - to the centre of the park. And there I found it: the Jack O’Kent Oak in all its gnarly splendour. Bees had built a nest in one of its hollows. I could see the charred memento of a lightning strike in its tops.

We don't need experts to be unquestionable heroes, nor villains. But like Batman, sometimes the anonymity around experts drives these binaries.

It's a challenge for policy experts in #thinktanks #academia and #policyresearch. When it feels frustrating, I think of this a great quote from @oeufling for @openDemocracy
Seems Freud tried to explain his complex theories more accessibly by imagining he was speaking to an impartial lay person Delightfully, he wrote them into the text “You are becoming to learned, I cannot follow you” not-Freud tells Freud before, essentially, “get to the point”

Expert Freud: “I don’t really care if you believe me because I know I’m right. …But also please will you keep an open mind about what I’m telling you” Lay reader Freud: “No hun it’s your job to convince me”

By working hard to stay close to a non-expert audience Freud gives a handy lesson how to elevate #researchcomms - Empathise with audience - Cut the jargon - Make your point clear - Nurture trust with transparency - Work hard to explain and convince, don’t just wish people got it

The misconception that there is no sound in space originates because most space is a ~vacuum, providing no way for sound waves to travel. A galaxy cluster has so much gas that we've picked up actual sound. Here it's amplified, and mixed with other data, to hear a black hole!

I wish everyone on Earth knew how genuinely "off the charts" key planetary trends are right now, and how abnormal and critical it is. Things like atmospheric CO2 fraction, heat extremes on land and ocean, biodiversity loss and extinction rates. All alarms should be going off

"The good working life is baggy and expansive. You have time to do a good job. You have time to be outside, to nurture relationships, time to care, time simply to be. All the really important things require time; ‘disposable time’." @HilaryCottam medium.com/iipp-blog/the-wor…
